Hell Pizza (a New Zealand pizza franchise) is opening a store in Gangnam around June/July. |

My thoughts as well. There's Domino's, Papa John's and the like already here. |

New Zealand has Dominos and Pizza Hut and Hell Pizza is way better than both of them. But it is pricey.
Their pizzas were originally a gormet style with quality toppings and their main point was great taste and lots of toppings on pizzas.
Most Kiwi's will say the Hell Pizza is the best by far.
In recent years their prices have come more in line with the major chains but their growth story was very good. They opened new stores very fast.
I have no doubt their store in Seoul will be a success it is just a case of marketing it well enough to get people in the door. |

One of the coolest things about them apart from their food though is that they really go through with the Hell Theme.
The stores are totally black from the walls to the counter, the pizza boxes and the chairs. The signs are lit up like red flames.
The menu items are named after terrible things. For example, there a pizzas called 'murder', 'purgatory', and 'cursed'. It can be funny actually saying that to the person taking your order!
Here is their menu: http://hellpizza.com/files-nz/documents/menu-2010-october.pdf |

It will fail miserably.
Or it will adapt.
And they will serve pizza with corn, potato wedges and sweet salad dressing on top. |

Yeah, Hells is sweet! Interesting that there's one opening in korea. I get the feeling the pizza market's more competitive here. Had a Pizza school one the other day n it was way better than Pizza Hutt/Dominoes ones back in NZ |

That's not surprising as no one says Pizza Hut or Dominos sell good pizza. If those are the only establishments that can be compared to Hell's Pizza, I'm not impressed.
And having to say "murder" to order the pizza is just another reason I wouldn't go. I don't enjoy having to say abnormal things to order food from restaurants. |

I'd guess you'd have to say it in Korean.
My thing would be the price. Papa Johns already runs around 25,000. If it's more expensive than that being a "gourmet pizza" i doubt they'll do well here. |

Fully agree with interestedinhanguk. The franchises don't offer sweet potato, corn, marshmallow sauce on their pizza outside of the Korean market. Adapt to survive, or perish in customer selection.
What I don't get is that at least in Seoul you can have great Pizza at around 10-15,000 Won (2 feed 3), mostly in Itaewon of course but for a 100% premium at most 4*+ hotels. Hell, there's even "smothered in cheese" style pizza around Noksapyeong.
The problem with locally adjusted pizza is of course that even a Margarita has at least half a dozen toppings here
My only prediction would be "can't be worse than Taco Bells". |
