It makes perfect sense to me and I think the reasons are so obvious that they don't require an explanation.
Am I wrong? |

You're talking about the soldiers at the gates, right? There are always Korean and US soldiers as far as I have seen (although the US soldiers might be the desk jockeys in the gatehouse or whatever).
Q: They are there to keep out who, exactly?
A: Unauthorized personnel.
Q: And in Korea, unauthorized personnel are most likely to be?
A: Koreans.
Q: And who is best-equipped to deal Koreans?
A: Other Koreans.
Do I really need to explain more? |

Bulsajo,
Nice post! I enjoy it when the voice of reason prevails.

A more suitable question would be:
Q: Are USFK soldiers equipped to converse with locals in their native languge?
A: Given the relative short tour most soldiers spend in Korea, no.
Q: What would be the best solution?
A: Posting Koreans at the gate.

By "guard" here I think you are referring to the police rather than soldiers who are dotted along the length of the perimiter walls of camps.
They are there to stop civil disturbances from locals, not to "guard" the base. |

And it's not like there's never been a civil disturbance at a USFK base.
Who can blame the Americans? During those confrontations between student activists and the base guards, which would be more inflammatory on the MBC news, photos of a Korean mob fighting a fellow Korean, or a Korean mob fighting an armed US soldier?
If Fonz wants to define cowardice, perhaps he'd like to take a stab at the Koreans in and out of government who publicly raged against the American presence, but when push came to shove, quietly and privately begged the Americans to stay.

What kind of a bull-headed machismo question is that? Honestly...

Why are there so many Korean riot police at demonstrations?
Beats me, but probably for the same reasons.
It strikes me as funny how you seem to view this issue as an American problem rather than a Korean one. |

The more pertinent question is why you are such a putzy, potsie.

Why does USFK need ROK soldiers to guard the army bases? Maybe because the army is off elsewhere standing guard against the North? |
