Do you need a special simcard for t money since the S2 already has NFC built in? The guy at SK said I did, but I want to be sure.

I've been researching this same quandary.

I'm unsure if the NFC ability is built into the phone or the SIM card. I'm starting to think that NFC is built into the phone but requires a special SIM for it to work. As there are varying thickness of the model depending if the phone has NFC capability or not.

PLUS I have a bonus question.

I've read on other forums that the SK model is using some protocol for mms called (sk-mms) while all other phones in the world use (oma-mms) which might create compatibility issues out of South Korea. Can anyone shed light on this issue?

Here I go:
The phone itself has active NFC built in, there's a korean video somewhere of a guy scanning a credit card and something happens on the phone. You also need a sim card with NFC capability, for my KT (not anymore...hurr) phone they gave me a T-money/NFC enabled sim card with a T-money serial number on the back.

SK is using a non standard mms system. It should be fine outside of South Korea if you're going to use mms. KT's version is the most friendly if you want to use it outside of the country.

I went to an SK telecom and an Olleh last night to get the respepective model numbers. (SK being shw-m250s and KT's being shw-m250k). At SK I asked about the NFC and just want to confirm what you've said that its a chip in the phone and requires a nfc enabled sim card. (he showed me the sim) Phone will still work with a regular SIM of course, but without the NFC function.

I'm trying to find the specs for these models in English. I saw the post made on the XDA forum link you posted where a Korean points out the sk mms, bloat ware, and band frequencies but I want to confirm. I'm really hoping its a quad band gsm. I want to unlock this phone and use it in Canada without issue. Knowing that SK-MMS will still work but not very well is a small issue as I believe the MMS protocols are stored on the SIM card and should change with a new carrier. If not Rooting the device and finding a solution must be possible.

NFC is a variant of the RFID technology that's in the T-Money cards. The same RFID chip is in the T-Money SIM cards.

To my knowledge there are no publicly available apps that really utilize NFC yet.

For now the only option you really have is to get the T-Money sim card, assuming your phone is capable of running the network provided app. See the other thread for more information.

As you have already started to figure out, most of the phones that are equipped with NFC are compatible with the T-Money sim card app .

Does the NFC sim card look different than a normal sim? more expensive? (Or around 9,900won still.)

Just a normal SIM, it's got T-Money printed on it though like everything else T-Money. Should be under 9900won.

Does the cdma lg version of the galaxy also have nfc?

I couldn't load t money onto it so I bought one of those wrist strap t money things

Also, isnt lotte going to allow nfc payment?
