Just a quick question. If my contract finishes August 31st, is it possible to get a extension until say 5th September so i can wire money home/sort stuff out after i finish work? Or do you have to leave the day after? Whats the longest you can extend after your official contract is up?
Thanks in advance for the info!

As long as you have the air ticket out of Korea you can extend until the date of the flight (up to 30 days past the end of your ARC).

There is no cost and you can do it at your local immigration office OR on-line (but you need to be able to forward or show your ticket out to get the extension).

Does it have to be a one-way ticket? seems like the answer would be yes, but if you were to hand in your ARC on the way out, wasn't sure if a round-trip would be ok.

It does NOT need to be a one-way ticket but it does need to be out of Korea.

Return on the next flight is fine - you would enter under a new visa or visa waiver class.

Visa waiver class? Does coming back as a tourist fall under that category?

If you come back as a tourist and do NOT have a visa (of some kind) then yes, you enter Korea in the visa waiver class (B1 or B2(Canadian)).

I don't mean to derail the thread but my contract has a clause that says I have to leave Korea within a week of completing my contract. Is that just a bs clause I can ignore or should I be concerned? Asking because my contract's up a month before my visa expires.

I don't think this is derailing the thread. It's relevant to the topic. I don't know for sure but I'm going to go out on a limb and say the contract can't regulate when you leave so long as your ARC is still valid. Unless the school can cancel your ARC early. I somehow doubt that. Is there more to the clause than what you've said? Like, "you have to leave within a week of completing your contract for the school to pay for your ticket home"?

OK let's see if I will derail the thread Sad

Can the ticket be to anywhere? Tickets to the US are super expensive now and I'd rather just go to another Asian country (closer) and wait it out. Or just travel a bit. Possible?

Well, ttompatz just said it has to be out of Korea. Another Asian country would qualify. Most people seem to choose Japan it sounds like.

Bottom line: don't overstay your ARC expiry date, no matter what your contract end date is. It will be you who faces a permanent ban from Korea.

You can exit and re-enter any Korean port to anywhere to come back in on a tourist visa.

I believe you can now scan your exit airticket and apply for the 30 day extension through the HiKorea site instead of going to immi office.

How do you do this online? And if I do this, what evidence do they provide me to prove I've extended the ARC? If I go there in person, I can see them physically modifying the date on my card and in my passport. But if I do that online, how does that work?

http://www.immigration.go.kr/
The link is on the left side of the page.

You fill in the application, show your air-ticket and receipt. (scan and attach/upload if you do it on-line).

They send you a PDF file that you print off (and they have your change noted in the computer) so when you leave you hand in your ARC and your passport scan shows you are still legal.
