Clearly some of you that consider yourselves real teachers (you are not), have taken this post the complete wrong way. If you are fueled and motivated by the respect and gratitude of your Korean bosses and the love of your students then good for you. 90% of people here are not.
Thanks to those honest people who appreciated the sentiment of my email.

Find a new job where you aren't wasting other people's time and money?
Edit: I see you edited your post to remove the offensive language. But I'll leave my advice as is. Although you aren't aware of it yet, it is the best advice you've received in this thread thus far. Your time is up. Time to move on to something that you find motivating. See ya!

+1
The amusing/sad thing is the OP actually took the time to post and make himself look like a waste of space.
Why not come up with these things on your OWN or..and that will shock you: actually do what you are paid to do and teach these kids...there are many ways to teach kids and make the lessons more interactive and engaging but sadly those require that you apply skills and put in minimal effort.
I for one am sorry for those kids who got you as a teacher for this summer program. Bad enough they have to be there, now they have to deal with wa wa wa foreign teacher who wants them to shut up and leave him alone while he is PAID to actually teach them. |

It takes a lot of prep work to make your lessons truly student centered, but once you get to class, they practice with each other and you simply facilitate. It's a lot more fun this way, and you should try to figure it out. |

Each lesson set an essay writing contest with a first prize of candy going to the longest one - irrespective of any merit. |

If you want 'hands off' activities where the students get on with their work without you having to do much, you can get them to work on projects such as making posters or mini-books on certain themes. MES English has some good exercises like this.
Buy or make some cards for Go Fish. Bogglesworldesl.com has a lot of free stuff you can use. Once they understand it, kids love this game, and if you give them prizes for winning they will happily play it for hours. |

I have better things to do than to ram a textbook down their throats, so I want some "turn-my-brain-off" activities that will cause them to sit down, shut up, and stop being little assholes. |
Ah, to be young again where I could have this attitude and still get jobs |

Actually the OP made some valid points and i see no reason to attack him/her.
Many kids do not want to be in class (no matter how amazing or charismatic the teacher). Not all students are alike. Some can be unruly and little 'a-hole' like in their manner. What's the point in spending huge effort in preparing a lesson if they're not going to respond to it.
The OP simply wanted to find an activity that his students would respond to, activities where the students are active and using English without realizing they're learning English. Actually i would argue that the OP is doing his/her job by trying to match material to his/her students. Remember, they spend their lives looking at books. They are children sitting in a classroom on a fine summer's day. The absurdity of it all should not be forgotton. |

People on this forum are so bitchy sometimes. Ladies, put away the handbags and remove the stick from your backside. What the OP said in his/her own slightly crude way, was something most teachers feel or have felt at some point. It's hot, the kids don't want to be there at the end of a long semester and they are probably acting out.
I for one, have been in a similar situation, so I don't mind lending some support in terms of ideas and tips.
Loosen up peeps, it's summer time. |

This is truth. In the past I've gone to great lengths to prepare interesting and engaging material for after school classes, spending hours making materials, only for the kids to not give two shits. Most of these kids are signed up to after school classes by their parents; they just want to go home/the park/PC Bang.
Once I'd planned to do animal bingo, only for half the kids to circle all 9 animals before I'd called out even the first one, then show me their cards and say "Teacher, I have bingo. I go to house now?".
You know the types of kid like that, they aren't worth the effort. These days for that after school class I just do Listen and Repeat with some vocab flash cards then give them pictures of the vocab to colour in, keeps them quiet, and I put the best ones up on the wall to try and get them to not just rub a purple crayon all over the entirety of the page. |

Thanks to all. I expected a mixed response. Just to quickly address the negative people: yes it does take a lot of work to make a lesson student-centered. I know that students learn more in such an environment.
I also work part time in a "real" school that uses modern methodology.
However the program that I referred to insists upon the use of the materials they provide. Some teachers are reprimanded for deviating from this. The whole point of the curriculum is to prepare them for an asinine test where they regurgitate a lot of useless information.
I'm pleasing my employer and the parents. Why should I risk my job to put in extra time changing the whole curriculum just to get yelled at and possibly fired? What I'm asking for is just some fun activities to supplement the material. Thanks to all who commented! |

<sigh> This is what Korea gets for hiring young "Jersey Shore-type" with a worthless degree. |

If the OP would have asked in a manner where he didn't call his students "little a-holes", I would have offered help. If he didn't ask in a manner in which he says he doesn't feel like working. I would have helped.
Spare us the "why the negativity" garbage. The OP brought it into the thread with his bad attitude and disrespect of his students.
How about asking like this: My students are tired and have a hard time focusing after a long semester. I'd like to know some of your tried and true games or activities that you use that allow them to work independently and quietly.
How would you like it if your kid went to this guy as a teacher? A guy who considers your son or daughter a little a-hole. How would you feel as a boss if your teacher didn't want to work. Think about that. |
