Are there any good over the counter (non prescription) sleep aids I can get when I arrive? I've got some Nytol from the UK but I don't like the rebound effect the next day - it makes me tense.

you can't get sleeping aids over the counter. what they'll give you if you ask is antihistamines.

i forget the korean for "sleeping aid", but when i used it, that's what they gave me.

they work, they're just not the same.

You can get sleep aids over the counter no problem. Just find the nearest pharmacy and say "sleep" and make the sleeping motion with your two hands as pillows and close your eyes, they'll get the picture.

Right on the box will be a picture of a little man going to bed or some cartoon like that.

Be warned though, these things are stupid strong. Take one and you'll be out for 11 or 12 hours and be drowsy the rest of the day. I used to take a half of one a solid 10 hours or more before I had to be awake. Even then I had to practically insert the coffee through an IV to keep me up.

It's a shame that you're the idiot giving false information. The strongest 'sleeping aid' available over the counter in Korea, is in fact, as has been stated nothing more than an anti-histamine that causes drowsiness.

The same is true in North America. If you want something stronger such as a benzodiazepine then you need a prescription.

However, it is comically easy to get a prescription for Valium, Xanax or Ambien here.

If you have trouble sleeping and want Ambien, go to a 'Well Being' Doctor/Psychiatrist. Simply state that you have trouble sleeping and they will prescribe Ambien.

Ambien is incredibly potent as a sleep aid and also habit forming, so only use this if you really need it.

The trade name for Ambien is Zolpidem, so likely on your prescription form it will say 졸피뎀 or similar.

huh?

jesus, dude, i was trying to help the dude out. from what i've read, UNDERSTOOD FROM DOCTORS I'VE TALKED TO, and experienced myself, you can't get anything stronger than an antihistamine over the counter. they're NOT traditional sleeping aids.

whatever. i'm getting pretty sick and tired of this forum.

I have purchased melatonin over the counter in Korea. Mild but effective sleep aid. Not every pharmacy seems to have it available, though.

It always helps me with my let-lag pretty well.

Melatonin is also available in Namdaemun in the imported foods section. Its in the basement of the "D" group of buildings. Just look for all the booths selling vitamins etc.

Trouble sleeping? Might I suggest the below site. A couple of minutes and you are out for the night.

I`d stay away from the benzodiazepines as you can build tolerance to them and become dependent. Zolpidem is not addictive but there have been cases of people sleep walking so if you have done this before avoid it. You will need a prescription for Zolpidem. The antihistamines are over the counter but they just make you drowsy. Safe to take because the more you take, the more adverse reactions you get.

Ideally it would be best to address the underlying issue. Usually stress, caffeine, alcohol, mental illness is the culprit. You might want to also look at your sleeping environment and your daily pattern - whether you have naps during the day, eat a big supper before going to bed. Medical conditions and medications can also affect sleep.

Ambien/Zolipdem is absolutely habit forming and it can be dangerous to discontinue it abruptly if using it at high dosages for a prolonged period of time.
Abrupt withdrawal of zolpidem may cause delirium, seizures, or other severe effects.
