I see a lot of people have too wait for their jobs to be available. How flooded is the market? Is it just the big cities that are hard to get jobs in? I have told some others that I would prefer a rural city over Seoul and Busan. I will get my Education degree in May. Do y'all think that if I ask for a rural location, the recruiters would be able to find a hagwon job for me around August or Spetember? I am more interested in a job over the location. |

It's bursting.
Lots of patience and determination might get you something in Seoul. Everywhere else not as hard...no cake walk though. |

I'm not even going to try Seoul. I'm just going to try any other city than that. I will get my Education degree in May. Hopefully some hagwon will accept me somewhere in a rural city or something. |

If you're getting a degree in education, I'm assuming you'll be certified? If so, you should have significantly more options if you're willing to go the hagwon route. |

I already passed my certification tests in Physical Education for Louisiana. So they will become active as soon as I receive my diploma in May 2012. I just have student teaching January-May and then I'm done |

Why wouldn't you test the US job market before coming to Korea? You will be getting your degree at the prime hiring season for teachers.
Anyway, I have a teaching license, too, and it doesn't really give a leg up on all of the basket weaving degree holders here. You have a 4 year degree, good--that's all they care about. |

Well, I'm not sure if I want to pursue a career in ESL. Right now I just think this seems like a great experience. I already have experience with kids in America, now I want to try teaching Asian kids. Also, if I find a job in America, it would be silly to leave that teaching position to teach ESL when I could have done it fresh out of school. I do plan on teaching in a different country no matter what. Korea just seems nice to me since I already toured around Thailand and Japan seems to be nearly impossible. |

On the other hand, if you put in a few years in the States, you'd have experience under your belt and could then apply overseas to work at an international school. |

I just signed a contract yesterday and can tell you the market seemed pretty flooded, with not that many jobs being sent my way. I did have interviews and contracts, so getting a job was possible, but it was hard to land the right contract in my opinion. If you are looking for a medium size city and it doesn't have to be close to a big city, then you should be okay. I wanted to be somewhere that had a subway line that ran through the city or a subway line that connected to Seoul. If you are okay with learning the bus routes and riding the bus(which isn't bad at all) then you should be good. |

Thank all of you for your responses. Should I apply for a CBC before I apply? Also, can I apply a couple weeks before I graduate, or do I have to show my diploma right when I apply? |

Just make sure you plan for the lengthy time it takes for your CBC to come back. I would probably start applying when all my documents are ready, so you don't burn all your recruiters up. In my experience, after a while your recruiters stop contacting you and fade away. My experience can vary from yours, because I didn't have to get a CBC or health check. My visa was much easier to obtain. |

For what this is worth, the hiring manager for our chain (60+ schools) says he has ZERO trouble finding a teacher, and gestured with his hands that he has a foot-long pile of resumes to choose from.
He says his preference is always to hire those who come recommended by a teacher he knows is solid. |

Is it because those applicants chose larger cities like Seoul? I want a smaller city. |

He didn't specify, but yeah, the bulk of the schools are in more populated areas.
Head to the sticks and your chances for landing a job increase. |
