If an employer asks you to sign a new contract before the old one expires, how does the labor board normally look on these practices?
Second, related question: Is an employer required to pay overtime for any work on Saturday? How about on a manditory 6-day week? |

As far as the contracts go it is fine UNLESS there are some shenanigans going on like fiddling with the starting and ending dates. Assuming that this is not the case then as long as you have extended your visa with immigration and submitted a copy of the contract it should be fine.
As for the Saturday work...it depends on your contract. If you signed a contract wherein you agreed to work for a certain wage Mon-Sat then no the employer is not obligated to pay for any overtime. |

If you sign another contract with the same employer, immigration pretty much doesn't care. I transferred to many other schools during my time in Korea, and they never blinked an eye. I even signed on for one school, and then went with a third. Immigration ignored the second school and processed it as a change from the first to the third.
So, I am pretty sure you have nothing to worry about.
As for Saturdays, that's all in the contract. Typically, hagwons will want weekends, public schools will never have you work then.
Count your classes if you want overtime. I average it out to 25 classes for 45 minute classes. Get the schedule you want, 2 days off and 3 if you can negotiate that (4 busier days). |

I foresee a possible 6-day week or "must work Saturday" change to the contract. The option may be a "sign or be fired." |

I'd ask for more money in that case. Someone who wants to increase your days without paying more...it's not worth keeping the job IMO. |

It sounds like he's "altered the deal". Pray he does not alter it further:

Seriously, trying to coerce you into signing a new and unfavorable contract is something the Labor Board doesn't take kindly to. I worked for a school who tried to pull something like this, and one phone call from the Labor Board put the kibosh on it. |

I'm still waiting for the unicycle. ^^
Thanks for the help guys. Any other suggestions would be awesome. I'm in a corporate hogwon, so I don't know how much negotiating room I have. But, the "not worth keeping" is sounding very wise least they want to alter the deal once more. |

I wondered the same thing, as this sounds like what my school is trying to pull. |
