As an antidote to the other thread "stories of stingy (cheap) foreigners" (which went on for pages and pages) I thought we could add some stories of some of the more generous among us.

Funnily enough I can't think of anything major.

THere was one guy who gave away an expensive three piece sofa when he was leaving Korea. He didn't even ask a penny for it.

So do we have any stories of generosity from foreigners?

I have several friends who have been giving away all their belongings (Bikes, chairs, tables and so on) when they leave.

Personally I'm most grateful to the foreigners who organise events such as sports events and other non-drinking activities. Mostly because I know I would be too lazy to do it myself, but I would like to join. I'm sure it's not completely selfless of them since they probably enjoy it and joins themselves too, but would still like to send them a thanks. There are many I would include, but I would especially like to mention one professor who recently passed away who would arrange multiple events weekly, inviting everyone, and was a really be a positive force to everyone around him.

I know plenty of people who do volunteer work.
I know plenty of people who bring in food for workmates and students.
I know plenty of people who go on weekend trips with students for no pay.
I know plenty of people who host holiday parties, spending a fortune on food.
The list goes on.

I randomly pay for unsuspecting couples' dinners for no reason.. Maybe 3 or 4 times in the last year.

Umm..are you dining with them?
If not, that's more weird than generous imo.

Dude, sshhh! You're giving away the best kept secret in the world.

Oh heck, the cat's out of the bag now. Might as well spill it.

Yeah, volunteering will you get you laid faster than if you had a different colored Lamborghini for each day of the week.

I stumbled upon this in university. There was a flyer on the wall in the hallway asking for volunteers to collect clothes and can foods one weekend. I thought sure, why not. I'm kind of random and spontaneous, try something new all the time. I got there and it was nothing but older folks and loads of uni aged girls. I was the only young male. Being that, I had to lift all the heavy boxes and such. No big deal. But man oh man did I get a lot of attention. The old folks were pampering me constantly. And the girls wouldn't stop checking me out all day. Some even cornered me a few times to talk and give me their number. I kid you not, I walked out of the warehouse with 4 different phone numbers in my pocket and dates lined up for a month. Volunteering is an effin gold mine. Plus, you feel really good about doing things for those less fortunate. Which, is pretty much enough to get you out and doing it.

Here it's even better. When these 20 something Korean uni girls see a strapping young foreigner like myself show up on a Saturday to teach orphan kids English and play dodgeball for a few hours, you might as well put a cape on me and call me super man. I'm never short on compliments and girls wanting my Kakao ID.

Chicks dig volunteering. If the word got out about that, man, there would be no starving kids in Africa.

I volunteered at a hospital for a while, long ago. Something like that is a good way to work on social skills too if you're a bit reserved or whatever. Plus there were some cute student nurses.

Good thread!

I know people who volunteered their time for various charities
I know peope who organized events for fellow foreigners
I know people who donated their time to teach poorer Korean kids for free
I know people who helped elderly people in their neighborhood

Its good to highlight those things for sure.

On a personal basis, I tried to help as much as I could. I wish I could have done more.
