Sorry if this is a silly question, but why not go to a department store and buy one for however much you want?

You do realize that anyone with said unwanted gift certificates could buy socks, chapstick, gum etc. and get the rest back in cash. Or maybe that's your plan?

You usually need to spend a certain amount on the gift certificate. (30-70% depending on the brand) in order to get change in cash. Depending on the denominations, it is sometimes better to sell them for cash (at a discount), and as such, there are quite a few shops which specialize in the "2nd-hand" market for gift-certificates.

Really? I've never had a problem with it but I usually go to their grocery stores, Hyundai, Shinsegae = emart and lottemart.

I always get certificates a couple times a year, but I don't shop at department stores.

It used to be that the guys who have the shoe shine places would buy the gift certificates off of you and convert them to cash (minus a fee). Not sure if they still do?
