Sorry if this is a silly question, but why not go to a department store and buy one for however much you want? |

You do realize that anyone with said unwanted gift certificates could buy socks, chapstick, gum etc. and get the rest back in cash. Or maybe that's your plan? |

You usually need to spend a certain amount on the gift certificate. (30-70% depending on the brand) in order to get change in cash. Depending on the denominations, it is sometimes better to sell them for cash (at a discount), and as such, there are quite a few shops which specialize in the "2nd-hand" market for gift-certificates. |

Really? I've never had a problem with it but I usually go to their grocery stores, Hyundai, Shinsegae = emart and lottemart.
I always get certificates a couple times a year, but I don't shop at department stores. |

It used to be that the guys who have the shoe shine places would buy the gift certificates off of you and convert them to cash (minus a fee). Not sure if they still do? |
