Did all of the EPIK or school jobs not get filled? I thought alot of young grads were coming here now. Did they fall through?
By the looks of it, it looks like a teachers market again...any ideas?

I've read a few positive reports on the US economy lately. maybe things really have started to turn there.
Or maybe the E2 requirements here have finally just proved too much for a lot of people. |

I'm saying a bit of both. Not as easy to backpack over here. Plus, China is coming on line. |

There are always a lot of jobs..but they are mostly new and will likely be filled soon. Be wary of extrapolating from this...it hasn't changed all that much for previous years...it's still an employers market
As we see from the Gusts Of Popular Feeling article linked below...the numbers of E-2's coming here each year is increasing...to say nothing of F visas. There was one slight drop off between 2003-2004..then a steady increase since.

Looking at those years, it would be an employer's market if teachers were applying at a faster rate.
I think what we are seeing is that the contract conditions are getting worse, teachers already in Korea are getting the good ones, and then it's a combination of more applicants with those rejecting offers which would have been more than suitable years ago.
Take into account the quality factor and the truth is a lot more revealing. My email offers have gone from 4-5 pages of offers with 5-6 decent ones to 12 total. Only one would have been worth asking about, but the pay was low and there was no indication where it was located exactly.
Online shopping for jobs isn't like what it used to be. I feel you need to hit the pavement if you want to secure a good job. Get your documents, go to Korea, and then interview in person. Give it 1 to 2 months, bring enough money. Don't just take a job offer thinking everything will be peachy when you arrive. |

That would seem to suggest that the number of eslers is unrelated to the western recession and unemployment.
Its a long term trend. A steady increase, probably due to greater awareness of the country and efl generally.
Its entirely likely that Korea will never be an "employees market" ever again. |

Quite likely...UNLESS there is another "IMF crisis" type event. |

The number of E2s issued gives you an idea of the number of jobs available (demand). They don't tell you the number of applicants (supply).
The increase was largely due to the expansion of EPIK; which currently appears to be retrenching. |

E-2 visas that are issued ARE issued to applicants. But they are only issued to successful applicants thus meaning the supply likely outstrips demand. Not quite seeing what you are getting at here.
And even the number of E-2 visas are less than demand. Remember the thing with SMOE a couple of years ago? Out of six hundred teachers SMOE told 1 hundred that they didn't have jobs for them.
And now SMOE is cancelling its program to place English teachers in high schools. |

It was an employees market in 2008. The numbers in 2010 weren't all that much larger. The only difference was the surge in applications. We went, in two years, from having more 40 and 50 somethings in the countryside to having 20 somethings, even in rural areas. If the surge in applications go down, that makes it better for everyone. I'd be curious to see how many applications there are in 2012 compared to 2010. Not just the total number employed here. That's the real deal breaker. |

EPIK started expanding slowly in 2007. Before that, it was a token foriegner or two in most towns. But the real surge happened in 2009. I suspect it started sooner with GEPIK or SMOE. Before that, I interviewed in 2006. It was becoming more difficult then to get a job in Seoul with no teaching experience. (This was before public school expansion.) So, the market was becoming somewhat saturatured by that point. But was still easy enough to find work. ALso, the rest of the country was still wide open. Getting into rural EPIK in 2007 required no sending of documents, references, or 40 minute phone interviews. They were just happy people would agree to come over and put up with a rural area. But in 2007 and 2008, some friends teased me for living in a rural area. They were doing hogwans in Seoul. AT that time, rural areas were considered pure BS. No one wanted them. But they were so slack. They were desperate, so they didn't enforce the rules much.
The recession changed that, of course. The surge was just starting slowly for a couple of years. So, if the number of applicants goes down and there are some public school jobs disappearing, it will even out. This is especially true if you have teaching experience and have lived in Korea. |

E2 are issued for successful applicants.
E.g. 2004 2010
Applicants 10 100
Jobs Avail 10 12
E2s issued 10 12
You don't know the number of applicants. |

I just think people on Dave's like hyping the 'Korean English teaching market is going to change for the worse' prophecy. I could get a job here if I attended an interview covered in feces and drunk to the hilt. |

Maybe the numbers of teachers hasn't changed that much but the number of e2 visas has risen as the number of tourist visa teachers has dropped. Every second person I met was on a tourist visa ten years ago and teaching |

Oh there are still plenty of garbage jobs around to judge by the number in the contract sticky thread alone.
It's getting a decent one that's the problem. |
