Newbie question.

If I were to apply in August, would it be too late for September positions in either public or private schools? Do these schools hire for October? (due to teachers not showing up or leaving)

Thanks in advance.

For public schools, yes... most likely too late. They start hiring early (like, around now), but private schools are pretty much hiring year-round... The real hiring times for private schools are for February and for September, but others have teachers drop out and such, so you can almost always find something... whether it's great or not... umm... but if you look at the job listings site on here, it's full of "ASAP! DOCS READY GET ON A PLANE!" jobs, so~ good luck! ^.^

I got a good GEPIK job while applying in July. Any reason why you want to wait until August?

I think June would be a good time to get your paperwork in order. Is it 6 months for the CRC? That would give you plenty of waiting time.

soomin made a good point, if you are already in Korea, you could easily snag an ASAP job. If you aren't already in Korea, then don't count on it.

I would like to apply earlier but my current contract in Shanghai finishes at the end of July. I would still have to head back to Toronto to prepare my documents and such.

I am in China, and the contracts in China usually only give a small amount for airfare. Also, there isn't any pension or severance like there is in Korea. Is it really worth it to stay the whole contract period?

Not all. Mine gives the eqvt of a mil won for airfare. More than enough to fly to Seoul and have 500k left over.

OP - I've had a ps job in SK that started in June and one that started in October. They do exist, due to several reasons I can't be bothered to ellucidate upon such as teachrs not arriving or leaving before ends of contracts etc. These jobs are good, as they are happy to have you...

No. In china you own your visa afaik. If you leave that job on good terms, get released and make it clear that you want to continue to live in the country on the same visa, you can find another job. You don't have to contact Chinese immi or deal with them at all until it's time for your next visa. You don't have to fly off to Japan or anything like that. That's why it's good to work for a foreign owned ed. company in China for your first contract e.g. Longman, Wall st. etc.
