Hi all,

Anyone buy a clothes dryer for their apartment? I would like to try and get one. Are they expensive? Will the landlord allow them? Any additional info would be appreciated. Thank you.

Clothing dryers are not very common in Korea... You should check your washing machine, as it may already have a "dry mode"... I've never met someone with a dryer, but I found some on gmarket.co.kr...

The Korean word for dryer is "빨래건조기" (bballae geonjogi) (not to be confused with 빨래건조대 (bballae geonjodae) which means "drying rack"). OR 의류건조기 (eu-i-geonjogi)

Gmarket usually has really good deals, and the ones I saw there started at 400,000 won and went up to 2,000,000+ won.

I think even some dryers are a bit different and not like the ones from back home. I think some people commented that some Koreans ones did not dry really well, more just heat up.

We had a gas dryer in our apartment. The unit cost about 800,000 won with installation fee. It was a Rinnai brand. It was wonderful. The electric ones are crap (and expensive). Unfortunately, our new place didn't have a gas outlet available on the balcony, so we had to sell it off. We're back to hang drying which is a lot new environmentally friendly. But I will never forget our short time with a dryer. Makes me tear up a little.

I had an old version of the electric dryer combo, and it was really crap. It would heat the clothes up to the point of burning holes in them, but not dry them.
That washer / dryer finally broke, and I got a new combo unit. I think the technology has come a long way because this one works really well. If you were turned off by these washer / dryer (electric dryer) units before, maybe give one a try again.
I still only dry it about 30 minutes and then hang it for environmental friendliness.
So to the OP, maybe tell the landlord that your washer is crap (is it one of those top-loading spinning types that ties clothes in knots? then it really is crap). Discuss a new washer / dryer electric combo. I think mine was about 650,000.

I've got an old electric dryer. Every place I've used it in I've had to call an electrician to install it because the place wasn't equipped to handle such serious electricity usage. Keep in mind that your place most likely won't have an outlet for the vent. I solved this problem by running the hose out the window. This also meant that I had my dryer in the spare bedroom as that was the only place it would fit and I had an outlet.

And then there's the electric bill. Oh dear lord that wasn't something I wanted to see.
