My physics is also more than a little rusty now but does this change the results of the Michelson - Morley experiment or is there another such experiment that actually verifies the existence of this aether?

Sorry - being lazy at the moment. I will read up on it some more - but overturning Michelson-Morley results would be crucial for it - no?

Thanks for this, I'd never heard about this experiment, it was an interesting read.

Given that it's been stated that the neither the Higgs Boson nor the Higgs field interact with photons (hence the reason photons have no mass) and the aether (for which Michelson - Morley gave a negative result) was the proposed medium through which light propagates (ie photons would interact with it) I'd say the existence of the Higgs Boson or the Higgs Field doesn't (in and of itself) require nor deny the existence of the aether. In other words it doesn't directly say anything about the aether.

However neither quantum mechanics nor relativity require it, and essentially deny its existence.

I won't discuss this any more with you as you appear to be brainwashed by some idea 'R' is evil - maybe you're from a Bible belt state or maybe you just watched the movie 'Contact' too many times.

Listen up sweetpea...give it a rest.
You had an agenda and got called on it.
You are too much of a coward to admit it...so you start with making up nonsense about origins and movie preferences. Rolling Eyes

Not that we should expect too much from an intelligent design cheerleader...go God!

Not sure what the rest of your post links were meant to do.
Couldn't be arsed to care at this point.

Again...give it a rest.

Cosmic Hum: I believe his use of quotation marks around intelligent desin was meant to be sarcastic. Just a guess, who knows how quotes and such work at the moment.

Yeah...you could be right...something sure does seem amiss.
I mean it is pretty comical to get called brainwashed by a religious nutter...but then again...stranger things get posted here at Dave's.

'..' = single quotation marks which normally doesn't signify sarcasm to my knowledge.

religious nutter = hyperbole. Sounds like I hit a nerve tch.
There have been and are many "Religious" aka spiritually-minded scientists. Einstein and Tesla were spiritualists - what the cosmic fail would call ""Religious nutters"" Get well soon peeps!
I'm from a Scientific background myself btw.

You guys just keep trolling at it. It's what I expect from Dave's..

Oh, and you're right The Cosmic FAIL, I do have an agenda, to continue my fascination with Science and the more esoteric fields.

& to bait losers and frauds like TCH - pretenders..

your propulsion idea sounds somewhat familar, reminds me of a few different conversations I had with bright-eyed junior physics students in university. Physics students became less interesting as they advanced through their major, or maybe it was only the uninteresting ones that survived it...

It's not that we became less interesting, it's that we lacked the time to do anything else. A large percentage of physics majors end up in computer science or engineering right around third year when the concepts start to get straight up esoteric rather than just interesting or philosophical. I made the mistake of trying to balance a social life and a physics degree and ended up begging my professor to bump my grade up to C- from D in fourth year quantum physics so I could graduate.

baiting is not trolling if it's legitimate.

The mother of all tangents - a veritable lever. Get back on topic.
In my OP, I mentioned the alias 'God Particle' for the boson.

To any intelligent person, that would be a clear sign that I was welcoming a more esoteric discussion - not to TCH apparently.

The cosmic crybaby kicked a fuss over it all. This is Dave's ESL cafe.
If people want to discuss the Science, I recommend perusing sites like this:

Err...you may want to consider reading up a bit because quotation marks aren't so cut and dry. They're so fussy, in fact, that I can't even tell you that you used them improperly.

What I can say is that the use of quotation marks around a word or phrase - whether single or double - draws extra attention to it.

That said, as you've made your intent that you were not using scare quotes, so it's neither here nor there. Add that I can further add is the blanket statement that I too would like to see more science talk and less religious talk (it's actually against the ESL Cafe TOS) on this particular thread.

Here's a rough overview of the Standard Model:

http://physics.info/standard/

AS astounding as it is that we know as much as we do, I can't help but feel that the model as it is now will look like a very poor draft in a few 100 years, if civilization hasn't collapsed by then.

Einstein was not religious.
Intelligent Design is a religion.
Again, how disingenuous of you to try and drag Einstein down to your level.

I agree with Zyzyfer...you use of quotations was inappropriate.

And why is it that some posters of strong religious beliefs quickly turn to name calling as soon as the thread turns against them?
I suspect it is because that is one way of getting this thread deleted and they don't have to be reminded that they got their ass handed to them.

Pegasus64128...the actions you are resorting to here does not speak well of your spiritual behavior...though it is in keeping with religious behavior.

You're the one trying to drag Einstein down to your level. Read up on the personal life of A. Einstein. Do you read? You might be surprised. He would say that he was spiritual, not formally R as you keep harping on about. Same for Tesla.

That's not what he said. You're mis-quoting again as you are desperate, and you appear to be a troll.

Spiritual not religious.
The thread will be deleted as you have nothing meaningful to add except trolling. I will add another link of interest to my post as I do, you will resort to childish reciprocation as you do. It's all you can do.

You don't know the meaning of the word.

As promised, here is another interesting story on dark matter, that was somewhat overlooked because of the legitimate attention concerning Higgs.

http://www.bostonherald.com/news/national/general/view/20120705dark_matter_filament_found_scientists_say/srvc=home&position=recent

It's too easy to expose trolls like you tch. All I have to do is keep on topic and keep exposing you, ad infinitum.

You just keep digging holes for yourself. You are the disingenuous troll and the record shows it. You have nothing to say except childish denial.

I exposed you for bing a troll, get over it. It happens to the finest trolls..

pegasus64128: we're generally friendly and all across the board - the board being ESL Cafe - The Cosmic Hum has never trolled for lulz. Well, at least not to my knowledge. Well, TCH has had some grammar trolls, but hey.

Anyway, I'm interested in the Higgs-boson particle. I'm not sure how to approach the discovery. I accidentally rented "Tree of Life" from the DVD shop and started jabbering on about it and found myself unable to explain it in layman's terms to my friend.

And the overview of the Standard Model, it's nice, but I do read up a bit. Makes me wonder why you brought up 'intelligent design' but yeah.
