South Korea's president is expected to visit islands also claimed by Japan, in a move set to raise diplomatic tensions between the two nations.
Lee Myung-bak's spokeswoman said the president would, weather permitting, fly by helicopter to the islands.
Japan's foreign minister has urged him to call off the visit, saying it would impact on ties.
The islands are known as Dokdo in South Korea and as Takeshima in Japan.
Both South Korea and Japan say they have a historical claim to the islands, and the issue has been a persistent irritant in relations.
The islets, which are roughly equidistant from the two countries, are small but lie in fishing grounds which could also contain large gas deposits.
"If the visit is made, it would go against our country's position and so we strongly urge its cancellation," Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba told journalists. "We must respond to it firmly."
He said the visit "would definitely have a large impact" on ties.
The South Korean president will first visit Ulleung Island before flying on to the disputed area, reports said. Mr Lee would be the first South Korean leader to visit the islands.

| Ironic in that he had tried to sneak through the agreement that would've allowed Japanese troops on Korean soil in the event of an emergency...well not like anyone figured he abided by any principles 'cept self-preservation to begin with... |

| I work with ROK officers. One of them told me today that he'd had an argument with his girlfriend over this. His view: LMB was being needlessly provocative. His view was that the Japanese PM would now have to go to Yakusuni Shrine. I was startled by his reaction. |

The Japanese have better claim to the island under int'l law, and that's why South Korea won't submit the matter for resolution to the int'l courts.
Also, what else would South Korean Presidents do to stir up nationalist sentiment in the Korean minguk if they honored Korean-Japanese treaties and shared the resources around the island? |

As far as I can see, LMB's trip today was an attempt to re-assert the claim that 'I hate the slimey Jap pigs more than you do' position, after that poorly handled military info deal that got stomped on a few weeks ago.
Sometimes, countries get all wrapped up in historic hate-fests and get blinded to the present/future threat (re: China). Just sayin'. |

They already did, several times. Japan has held Korea as its private posession numerous times throughout history.
Were it not for mongol, russian, american and Chinese help...Korea would be little more than a province of Japan. |

The fact that SK is in possession of the islands right now seems to me to be a pretty strong case. |
