Has anybody ever worked for the Bu Yeo Education Dept. in Chungnam Province? I've been offered a job and need info about cost of living, workplace conditions, and the local vibe. I hope that it is a friendly place as it is small. |

I've never worked there but I know people who have. One guy in particular loved it. It's small, rural and has lots of historic sites if that is your thing. I think the guy I'm talking about had only 10 kids in one school. |

Thanks for the reply to my post. I was told by the male recruiter from Maple Recruiting that I'd be teaching a small number of kids in all of my classes. I got the co-teacher's phone number and she told me that I'd actually have almost 40 kids in each one of my classes. She also said that most of them are orphans or have learning disabilities and that foreigners are not good for Korea and run away from the schools (I'd have to work at 2 schools). I assured her that I'm going to be professional and stick it out. However, I might bail on this job offer. |

You will not believe this: The co-teacher sent me a letter from the principal and it asks why I want to go to Korea and if I'd complain about working on all national holidays for free and if I'd tell the government. He calls this a cultural difference between Westerners and Koreans. The co-teacher admitted to me that an American male sued them for being fired without notice and cause.and the human rights commission investigated them for this and child abuse against students. She said that the former teacher told the government about kids being badly beaten and that this is the Korean way.
Maybe I will try to go to another province as Chungnam appears to be very backwards. And I'll stay away from Maple Recruiting while I'm at it. |

Oh, is it okay to post the principal's letter here? It's in Korean and English. I hope that a moderator replies to this because I can not send a message to any of them. |

I wonder why the foreign teachers don't stick it out there.
At least they were honest, I guess? |

Just write it Buyeo, nobody puts the space there.
It's a town of 90,000 people. It has an old primitive fortress, large and really nice to walk around but not real impressive. It also has a Lotte Burger right across from the bus station, but Lotte Burger is not exactly a McDonalds. Koreans like it better though. It has a small restaurant area with some nice restaurants. It also has a fairly old temple with a Buddha statue out in the courtyard, well weathered but discernible. The reason it is mentionable is it's from the 1200's and is very large. One of the most important things about Buyeo however is you can take an express bus from the bus station to Seoul with only a few quick stops. It takes
2 1/2 hours, good for weekends. |

Both the class size and the having to teach multiple schools are very common. I taught 6 classes, 40 kids per class in a city close to Buyeo. Most likely your co-teacher will teach the Curriculum English classes with you assisting her. Although you might teach the extracurricular classes alone which will definitely be smaller, especially as students stop attending them. You might not be able to get any other kind of public school job, considering the fact you're new to Korea. You can try for something else if you want.
Although not a red flag, if the co-teacher actually asked if you would be willing to work on government holidays that are national holidays where employers are generally on holiday then that may be a problem. If she asked you if you would tell the government then you probably would be paid under the table from some school money pool. It would mean extra money, I would almost say go for this job except that this is sort of odd, I don't know. It would only be a year and I know Buyeo, it's not all bad and it would get your foot in the door for public school positions. Another thing too, if the principle and co-teacher like you because you're willing to toe the line it could mean recommendations from the both principle and co-teacher. |

@Young Clinton
Does Buyeo have any private language academies? I tried to use Google to find an answer to this question but had no luck.
The apartment for the public elementary schools gigs is in a big complex in Dong-ri and there are a lot of other foreign teachers living there. |

I teach in Buyeo at an elementary school here. I like it because the cost of living is lower than the cities and the town's not too bad. If you want to go to Seoul or Daejeon, they're relatively close by, and the English teachers that are here in town are pretty cool. If you want to know more, just ask specifics. |

Whoa, didn't read this part. Screw that crap. Don't take that job offer. I like the school I'm at and haven't run into any of that, but then again, I don't know how the other schools operate around here. |
