Is this the word that posters will throw out every time they are called out on their childish/trollish/baiting rants about Korea?

I don't know. Some people seem to rather endearingly think it is some kind of withering insult that automatically wins them an argument.

For me, it's a rather convenient method of distinguishing good posters from bad.

Agreed. I'm not even saying everyone has to love Korea because a lot of people won't, but it seems that when someone points out a completely different experience from theirs or god forbid say that they enjoy living here, then they automatically jump to the word apologist as if it means something lol.

Its a polite way of saying...

Captain Corea, you make good points, but you have the personality of sandpaper.
TUM, goodness, you make digging ditches sound like more fun than talking to you.
PGH, 2008 is about as relevant as a Blackberry.
Steelrails- Get a life you windbag.

We're better than that, but I can see it. All in good fun.

I've said it once and I'll say it again. If Korea is really unacceptable, go find a place that is acceptable, or go flip patties somewhere, and make it easier for me when I finish what I am doing and want to come back to Korea.

Has no one figured out apologist is frequently contextually misused on these forums?

That's really sad because the majority of us are English teachers.

What makes you think this?

I don't think it's lost on anyone that people get called apologist even when there is no actual apologizing/defending going on.

That's exactly where a lot of misuse is coming from.

ie. "Koreans are so dirty"
"America is dirty in some parts as well".
"You're a dirty Korean apologist"

etc etc.

It's a word the haters and racists use to try to win an argument when they can't defend their position.

I actually enjoy being called an apologist. Let me tell you why. The people that throw this word around typically hate Korea so much, yet they continue to live here. Their lives must be so miserable. My life, on the other hand, is fantastic!

I have a beautiful wife, lots of friends, friendly neighbors, a nice apartment in a centrally located dong, a kick-ass job(s), a ton of vacation time, a stack of cash... really everything I could ever want (sans good clean weather. Seoul sucks balls for this.) When someone calls me an apologist, it reminds me how fortunate I truly am.

I'm not a supporter of the whole apologist thing; don't recall ever calling anyone that myself. What has been provided here, however is the same thing on the other end of the spectrum.

Insecure defensive middle aged weirdos with Korean wives (the majority of Dave's posters) insult others in childish ways and then get mad when they get insulted back. We call those people apologists. They defend Korea (because any attack on any aspect of life in Korea is seen as an attack on themselves personally...which is kind understandable seeing as how they are a lifers), but while defending Korea to an absurd degree, they throw in some low blows. These people get on our nerves. (Our as in non-lifers) If those people were really secure in themselves and their position in life, would they really be foam at the mouth insulting towards others?

And....vice versa, right? I mean, you have actually stated many times that it is your mission to directly insult others in an attempt to get them to leave the boards. Where does that put you?

Yup, same here. And furthermore, I see the term as a sign of 1) sour grapes and/or 2)that the person throwing that word around is a pathetic and bitter loser who'll be miserable no matter where he lives.

Not true. That is not my mission. (And I didn't say that- certainly not many times. I just said if someone is a bully, bully them back, as unfortunately other methods won't work.) My mission is to learn and discuss pertinent information. Not sure why the hardened Korea defenders even post on this board. They want to tell everyone how great and wonderful they are and how Korea is great and those who are not in their position suck...yet they do all this without being interesting or insightful.
