Sergeant Carter was in charge of Gomer Pyle, but it didn't make the Sergeant a 4 Star General.

Hilarious!

Seems you just can't seem to know the difference between rank and position.

PS: 60 million for 12 hours a week AIN'T BAD NEITHER!!!!!

And the housing is GREAT!!!!

By this time next year I will be an Associate Professor and pay will be around 70 million.

Wow. A 10,000,000 won [ 10 million won ] increase in salary in one year. I don't believe you.

If anyone really believes drcrazy is getting a 10 million won INCREASE in salary next year, please raise your hand.

And the old I was drinking while on my keyboard excuse isn't going to fly.
Nothing unusual about this increase. I receive tenure at the same time when I become Associate Professor, just as do the Korean professors.

Dr Crazy,

What subject do you teach?

If you're teaching English Lit or Sociology, then no one will have an issue.

But if you're teaching Hogwan style stuff, then it's kinda.... ummmm.

You get tenure with Full Professor in Korea not Associate.

Haters - please-uuuuu, please-uuuuu calm down.

Why all the blatant jealousy and hysteria about us Englishee profs? Question Shocked

For the record, my quals are as follows;

Here is the definition of professor....

A teacher in a college or university. Someone begins as an assistant professor, then becomes an associate professor, and finally a full professor

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

You hagwon people are all bitter and twisted. I won't paint all hagwon-white-monkey-clowns as losers, but most are. You guys are what the Koreans refer to as LBH. Instead of whining like little girls, why don't you get off your rear ends, and strive to climb the esl ladder? Rolling Eyes

Begrudgery seems to be the Waygook way in Korea. I really pity you people, and I mean that in a nice way. It must be tough, having to be a performing white monkey, each and every day. You guys know deep down, that you sold your soul for a few bucks.

So LIVE WITH IT. Cool

You're a teacher / instructor. There's plenty of people here with Masters degrees (myself included) who wouldn't have the audacity to call themselves "professor" just because they teach on a campus. It's stupid, it's delusional, and just a little bit like eight year olds playing dress-up. We all try to escape reality in our own ways, but when you start telling other Westerners that you are a "professor" (when we all know the gig) you come across as someone who is just a bit odd.

Yup! Adding dr to crazy in some title doesn't automatically make the person a doctor.

I do believe, however, that my PhD does. I would not be allowed to teach MA courses, let alone PhD level courses without one.

Dude, if you do indeed have those qualifications, and they are in a related subject, then this discussion is not about you. You can feel free to leave this thread. Noone is laughing at you. You put in your time and made the financial sacrifices to get a PHD. We think that's awesome. What we don't respect are kids with an Hon. BA in phys-ed telling us that they are "English professors". Surely if anyone should be knocking this idea on the head it is you.

Not everyone wants to teach English at university. Others do, and that's wonderful. If you are happy with your job, that's outstanding. Others prefer public schools. Some even prefer hogwans. Not everyone aspires to teach ESL at university. If a job came along in our field of study we'd likely jump at it, but I for one have no interest whatsoever in teaching ESL to Korean adults. If I must teach ESL while I'm here in Korea, I much prefer to teach children (again, this despite the fact that I have the degrees to get a uni gig). The university thing seems to be to your liking. Noone is begrudging you this. All we ask is that you refrain from thinking you are a professor. It makes you appear immature - as does your resort to throwing insults at anyone who tries to introduce you to reality.

What is this reality? The reality is that the difference between you and someone working at a public school or hogwan is a) the age group b) the location, c) the alloted vacation time. As someone else said, the main difference between hogwan students and your students is that the kids have dried squid at break time, while your students smoke cigarettes. That is not enough to make you a professor.

You get tenure with Full Professor in Korea not Associate.

If this were the case then there would be very few with tenure, as the rank of Full Professor, as in the United States is a rather rare thing. There were professors in my PhD program in the USA who had been associate professors for ages and had tenure. A large percent of college professors never reach the rank of Full professor and have tenure. Most retire with the rank Associate Professor. This is also the case in Korea. In very many ways Korea modeled their Higher Educational system on the system in the USA.

I found this on Wikipedia. This was the same system as where I received my BA and MA; however, I am sure that where I received my PhD you had to have the rank of associate Professor. Becoming Assistant Professor is not at all difficult. To go up to Associate usually happens for all of them a few years after Assistant Professor rank has been achieved. Then, as mentioned above, the rank of Full Professor is quite rare. One could almost liken it to the stupid post about a 4 Star General.

These full-time faculty members engage in both undergraduate and graduate teaching, mentoring, research, and service. Only faculty in these positions are eligible for tenure.
• Assistant professor: An introductory level professor. A position generally taken after receiving a PhD and completing a post-doctoral fellowship. After 4–8 years, assistant professors will be either tenured or dismissed from the university.
• Associate professor: A mid-level, usually tenured, professor.
• Professor (sometimes referred to as "full professor"): a senior, tenured professor.

Not everyone is the same. I hated teaching adults. I can get my own dates. The money was the same as a hagwon gig. I liked teaching a HS, but Ive had some good hagwons, and the one now is very cool, so I work hard for them. Its like saying every foreigner wants to be in Itaewon. Id take Busan any day over Seoul, myself.

I think some people have made this hierarchy, some kind of ladder for people to climb here, and living in HBC and teaching a UNI is like the peak. Thats just weird. Who decided that?

Knowing what you like and what you want to get out of this crazy ride is much better.

Living in HBC is at the top of some kind of ladder? That's news to me. I just thought people went there for the cheaper housing.

Much ado over nothing smithington, scorpion and others. So friggin' what if some guys (or gals) play the university professor card? Its a pet peeve of mine as well actually. Just like it is when girls who do rock/rap videos call themselves 'models' or 'video model's and try to make you think they are the same as runway models.
People back home inflate their job status all the time. Look at resumes that HR departments get sometimes. Words like 'analyst'....'director'..etc. banded about and its no where close to what they did. Janitors saying they are 'Sanitation Engineers'. I don't make a fuss about it.

For the record, I am very reluctant to mention where I work at the bars. I know my place in the universe and I am fortunate. I have a great life. People gotta drag it out of me. Where do you work? I work south of the river. Because I know the enmity and the possibility of looking like I like the smell of my own excrement. The only time I've used it Is to make money for privates. I don't apologize for it if it gets me paid. I don't use it to get myself laid. I have enough game for that. Others don't. Their choice.

I have friends who use it at the bars or where ever. 80% of us teachers are a bit off anyway and so I am not surprised that LBHs with uni jobs use it to get girls or make themselves seem self important. Some may try and justify the title. You may disagree. All well and good. Let them live in their own little world. Many of us like to feel superior. Who the F cares. Certainly not enough for a series of posts from others that include happiness that fellow teachers may lose their jobs. I've seen other threads where people try and dissuade people from taking uni jobs for no valid reason. That's where it gets a little pathetic.

Here here! I hope I can be a "professor" one day and be important. More likely than my being a video model Wink

One rule I have for all of my students is to never call me teacher, professor, Doctor.... Mr......

They call me by my first name.

And thousands upon thousands of times when a student whom I do not know on a university campus wants to ask me a question or strike up a conversation and starts by saying "professor" I then introduce myself and tell them to call me by my first name. If a student asks me, "Are you a Professor here?" I say yes because that is the term for the job that I do (i.e., teach at the college/university level). Then I introduce myself and ask them to call me by my first name.

I have been in Korea for ages, and I have found that almost all of the native English speaking professors I have known also have this same rule/system.
