While I have observed that women are often treated as second class citizens in Korea, this story about the gender of a Korean woman(?) Footballer has me confused. Can anyone shed light on her true gender?

"This is not the first time that Park's gender has been questioned. Prior to the 2010 Asian Football Confederation Women's Asian Cup, the Chinese team manager demanded that Park undergo a gender test. Park ended up not being on the final roster of the Korean national team."

Salmon pink is cool.

It takes a real man to wear it!

I think one of my uni students has some form of gender identity issue. She looks, dresses, sounds, acts and probably thinks like a male. If I wasn't working at an all-female school, I would never be able to tell she is female.

I just came to the board to ask about shopping, but after I saw this I couldn't help but respond.

I'm a bit shocked that national newspapers & the OP (Gender Bender?) don't understand the difference between sex and gender. (Are they using Wikipedia as there educators? Tsk tsk.) If gender is a prerequisite for soccer/ football or something that can even be tested, then I'd be darned if there isn't a Nobel prize winning scholar somewhere hiding in the country (likely peering over bushes at people).

There may be some social issues brewing over her gender, but I doubt that her sex is difficult to establish, the latter of which is the only one important for playing a sport.

Now back to shopping needs...

I'll be honest, I didn't know there was a difference between sex and gender either. Is this common knowledge?

Good question. For the college educated engaged in discourse on such matters, I would certainly hope so. Unless, they have every intention of pontificating about things they don't know.

But smtg like this passing through editors at national newspapers is really a bad sign. I'm getting the feeling few women or male feminists work at these papers.

I'm not a feminist. And yes, I'd say it's pretty common knowledge that they're different, but few people have ever taken the time to look up the exact definitions (the job of editors/ writers).

Personally, I think it's important to know the difference between a transgender and a transsexual. I mean, they are people too.

I just love when people make these kind of posts. Those who see the irony get to wink at one another and share a small chuckle.

I thought sex was male, female for reproduction and gender was hetero, homo, bi, trans, cross-dresser, but I think is a room for one more. Now that LeBron James has 'come out', as he said:

"I love myself, and I get turned on by me, and since I am a man, I must be gay."

time has come to add another letter to LGBT, and that is W for 'wanker'.

The irony that Wikipedia is a haphazardly organized compendium of scholarly works, which actually confuses the laypeople who rely (often heavily) on it? Oh that "irony?" Ummm lol? <girl rolls eyes and chuckles>
