So I think about people planning on returning to their home country and how much a career as an ESL teacher in Korea will help them get a job.
I imagine the guy conducting the interview or looking at their resume seeing NET in Korea pop up and googling it to find out what it's all about. Maybe finding some recruiting companies and then finding that most NETs will go online and....
-complain about their bosses, the food, the people
-appear to be narcissistic people that think they are too good for the job that they have
-use underhanded methods to get holidays, benefits, skip out on work, get out of contracts
-just generally air all the dirty laundry about their workplace in public and constantly mock their employers and the people that pay their bills
-instead of taking advantage of the opportunity to live abroad and learn, just talk about how they would rather be somewhere else or how home is better
It's defnitely only a small portion of the ESL community that does this in Korea, but it is what most of the material found on the internet consists of. I am guilty of contributing to it as well.
When I look at the job I see how it could easily be considered an asset to have someone with the experience in a company. Unfortunately, we are continually shooting ourselves in the foot by committing one of the most deadly sins of any workplace which is broadcasting the most simple problems in public. I don't expect it to stop, ever. I just think it's something people should consider when they think about putting this on their resume, or using this as a career builder. I hate to say it, but we do it to ourselves.
The exception would be people just asking for advice and trying to resolve issues, because that really is a difficult thing for people to do in Korea. I just really wish people would stop making youtube videos and blogs that make everyone look bad. |

Don't worry about it. Unless you're applying for an esl position back home, it won't mean diddly to your employers. In fact, they will be curious why you wasted that time abroad. Some might be impressed depending on what job you're applying for. If they were so inclined to read up on NET's online, I'm pretty sure they would agree with the complaining considering it's a place they have no idea about. |

Yeah, that wasn't as clear as it should have been.
maybe more like most nets THAT go online and post will....
and the idea is that the majority of online content produced by NETs just doesn't come off as too professional. As a result the job is perceived as somewhat of a joke. I would argue that it isn't any more of a joke than a lot of other jobs out there on the domestic front that pay 5 - 10k more, but the difference is you don't see those employees posting rants (and if they do discipline is usually the result). The end result of it is the NET field being perceived as it is presented online by a lot of people.
Fast food companies routinely fire employees for making youtube videos and spoofs, but that doesn't really happen to NETs. The irony is that at the end of the day I feel like a policy like that would protect the NETs more than it would protect the schools. |

| I hope you aren't using Dave's ESL cafe as your benchmark. This forum is just the same 15 guys arguing over the same crap for nearly two decades now. Newbs come in and get tossed around by the resident chatterboxes and then move on their way. It's like that local pub in your hometown. There's always the one-off visitors coming through and then there's the same 5 guys sitting at the bar just waiting for a good argument to pipe up to quench their boredom. |
