More (unsurprising) details in the article.

Sadly and unfortunately that is not surprising. Has anyone witnessed any noticeable difference in public safety measures in every day life since?

They tested the emergency signal where I work, but no fire drill followed.

I may have noticed a few more signs here and there. I had never noticed the detailed instructions for how to use a fire extinguisher as part of Megabox's exit strategy video, but I can't say for sure that was new.

Other than that, no.

We had a semi-organized fire drill for the first time ever a couple of weeks ago. Prior to that if the fire alarms had gone off for whatever reason it was completely ignored by students and faculty. The NETs were concerned about it, but no one else was.

The fire extinguisher video was always there.

What they need to do is tell people to not talk or check their phone every five minutes.

I'm gonna strangle someone if they talk during the new talkin ape movie.

You know, that's a very tempting intro to some humor, but it seems a bit obvious so I'll pass.

How about using an ape for your avatar? How about letting Paul Walker RIP?

Not that creep-O again.

There are plenty of private detectives in Korea. They mainly specialize in debt recovery.
There are also private armies in Korea (조폭). They specialize in getting people into debt. Laughing

Five more dead:
Quote:
A firefighting helicopter crashed into a residential area of South Korea's southern city of Gwangju on Thursday, killing all five firefighters on board, officials said.

The helicopter was returning to its headquarters in Gangneung, about 237 kilometers east of Seoul, after participating in search operations for 11 people still missing from the April 16 ferry disaster, they said.

But another of the dead was found.

Tragic about the helicopter, even more so since it is linked to the ferry sinking.

By the way, do you have a link about the ongoing search? You mentioned another recovery but it was not mentioned in the story that you linked to.

Hey, that's my line....but thanks!

By the way, from that link it says:

"Victims' families insist that heavy cranes can only be brought in to lift the ship once all the victims have been accounted for."

I understand being sensitive to the families, but that's just making things much more difficult...and dangerous.

Yea my fiancee said the same thing the other day. What about the rescuers families?

She admitted that Koreans can be very emotional and not think things through when it comes to things like this.

I wasn't really too interested in that part of the story at first - the search for the owner of the ferry. But that article reads like a movie script.

In Ferry Deaths, a South Korean Tycoon’s Downfall

"SEOUL, South Korea — After all the lavish galas in his honor at landmarks like the Louvre and Versailles, the tens of thousands of devotees following his religious teachings for decades, the hundreds of homes and businesses reportedly stashed around the globe, Yoo Byung-eun ended up alone, his body splayed on its back and rotting in the weeds, empty liquor bottles by his side.

Weeks before, nearly 10,000 police officers had raided his church’s compound in the largest manhunt in South Korean history, armed with backhoes to dig up underground hiding places, only to leave empty-handed. They had almost caught him once, it turned out, but Mr. Yoo slipped away, hiding in a secret room behind a wall in a distant villa, almost $1 million in two suitcases at the ready."

The Sewol crew's conduct is revealed to be more disgraceful every time they open their mouths.

Quote:
An engineer said he and a colleague drank beer in a hallway as they waited to be rescued by the coastguard after their ship started to list, South Korean media reported on Wednesday.

"We took a sip to calm down," the engineer, who faces charges of negligence, was quoted by major newspaper Chosun Ilbo as telling the court in Gwangju, the southern city near the disaster site.
....
The testimony drew ridicule from the families of some victims, who were in court, the paper added, with one of them asking, "Would you like a beer now, too?"

............

The 15 crew members on trial, including the captain, Lee Joon-seok, 68, have said they thought it was the coastguard's job to evacuate passengers.

When he took the stand last week, the ferry captain, on trial for homicide along with three crew members, said he was just following established practice in not making safety checks before the vessel set off.

No surprise.

I wonder if they looked into that rumor about the Phil Massage girl?
