Ok, my title is a bit sensationalist, but after reading the article, is it really that far off the mark?

A six-year-old girl was pronounced dead at a hospital after falling out of a Taekwando academy bus, Yongin Police Department confirmed Wednesday.
On Monday, the girl surnamed Yang fell out of the hagwon car due to the unlocked door that had swung open as it drove, resulting in a severe head injury with external bleeding.
"The car drove abruptly without even checking if the door was closed properly, and my baby just dropped out on to the streets," Yang's mother was quoted as saying.
The hagwon had reportedly put Yang back in the car and drove back to the hagwon in order to take the other students in for class.
An ambulance was called after a period of 10 minutes after arriving at the hagwon.
Firefighters were quoted as saying that the girl was taken to the emergency room at "a distance from the site of the accident," and that her breathing seemed to be getting weaker when they first saw her.
"At first she did have a pulse, but by the time we reached the hospital, it was almost gone," a firefighter said.
The students that had been in the same car as Yang are currently in a state of shock.
A fellow student's mother said, "I have to give my kids a tranquilizer or something, because he keeps saying that he's scared and won't even talk to me."
There were no assistant teachers in supervision at the time of Yang's accident, nor were there proper safety checks for belts and doors, the police confirmed.
Police are to file an arrest warrant for the driver surnamed Kim, 36, within today.

What a terrible story. And so very Korean in content. Absolutely nothing has been learned since the ferry disaster. Same nonsense.
What a terribly unnecessary way to lose a child. I feel awful for the parents.

The parents must be devastated. |

When kids have accidents, most hakwons are reluctant to send the kid to hospital or call emergency services.
They give it ten minutes to see if the kid recovers first. Because drawing attention to accidents unnecessarily can have a massive negative impact to your business.
The whole legal liability often means no more field trips, games or activities (too dangerous).
Basically at the end of the day you can't do anything with the kids except have really boring classes where they are sitting all the time. Because doing anything exciting is too risky.

Yes, compare some small business owner's safety management to some transportation company carrying 1000's of passengers a day... |

The root cause was the same--profit before people. |

What a load of bullshit. My kid's school does outings twice a week. They are not worried about legal liability. Kids are kids and they do get hurt sometimes and the teachers deal with the situations accordingly. Parents are warned on orientation day that outings are common and if you are worried about them getting dirty or whatever the parents are told upfront to take their kid to another school. And the reason the owner of the school can say that to parents is because his school is one of the best ones around. |

That very next day there was another accident, but this time only the driver was injured for not wearing his seat belt. All of the other kids were buckled up, but the driver forgot to put his on after helping and checking all the kids. |

Can't imagine what the parents are going through right now. To lose your child to something so senseless and avoidable. What do you guys think will happen? Driver's going to get jail time obviously, what about monetary compensation for the parents? Can they sue the school? If it's a mom n pop school, I'd imagine they're filing for bankruptcy right about now and booking tickets for the U.S.A. or some other country. |

Many many lessons to be learned here. Among them, if anyone here owns their own hagwon and employs drivers, you can be sued if he/she screws up.
If anyone on here is in that situation, check and double check. Micromanage your drivers if you have to. And follow the law with having parent helpers in the back. As annoying as it can be. |

The lesson is don't shuttle your customers around. But I think that might be a death sentence for a hagwon, unless all the others decide to stop driving their customers around.
There will always be accidents, and deaths. Can't predict it. |

Negative about practices in this country, but I guess that's above your level. |
