I know the OP is trolling but he does bring up a good point.

The majority of people i know are from Canada and more specifically three places, Toronto area, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.

The ask them why there are so many here and I get 1 main answer the majority of the time.

1.The job situation back home for graduates is terrible and my uni debt is so bad that this is an easy was to pay it off and add some life experience most other people would never have.

So there is the answer Brian O'Brien. Very simple and to the point and a resonably fair answer. they are looking for other alternatives.

Nova Scotia and Newfoundland rely(or did rely) on fishing but nowdays this is no longer a viable economic source which has an onflow to the rest of the community which leads to less jobs. I would leave and look for adventure too.

If thats not a satisfactory answer then you my friend are not a curious observer but a shit stirrer.

I would say it used to be the case many ESLers here were from Canada, specifically the Atlantic Provinces. When I first arrived here, this much was true. The economic realities for new uni grads from Atlantic Canada warranted their coming here.

In the last four/five years or so, I would say there are an equal number of ESLers coming from all over; England, Aus, Ireland, NZ, South Africa, Scotland and Wales. I don't think NAmericans outnumber anyone anymore. As a matter of fact, where I work now, NAmericans are outnumbered by our counterparts from Europe and Oceania.

I do not, however, have any statistics to back these ideas up. My assertions are pure conjecture. Anyone who has any hard numbers, please post them.

Economic reasons mostly. Do you think anyone in their right mind would come here if it weren't for the promise of the money they can save? I sure wouldn't have. Sure, I've had jobs where I made more, back home, but most of it went to taxes and work related expenses. Not much hope of saving money, then tack on the seasonal work factor and you can see why I'm here.

I was tired of nearly starving to death every winter, and having to rack up my credit cards at the start of spring season because I had no money to prepare for work next spring. I also got tired of being on unemployment every winter. I am thankful that it was available to me, but I sure don't want to make it a lifetime career, like a lot of people do back home.

I had to get out in order to break the cycle. I may whine a lot about Korea, but I sure can save money here. Very Happy

So there's my answer.

A poster on this thread figures Canadians are 'more adventurous than Americans'. I don't know if I agree with that. I think America is 'it' to alot of Americans, perhaps, so why go anywhere? Maybe. When I was down in Thailand there was no shortage of Americans, and Thailand is an adventure.
I wonder why there are so many Canadians, as well. I'm Canadian, from Saskatchewan, which is an economic backwater. There could just as easily be a lot of people from South Africa, U.S., Britain, but Canadians make the majority; is it fifty percent here?

Close. We're grown on plantations next to the Douglas Firs, Scotch Pines, and other Christmas trees shipped (mostly to the U.S.). At night we sleep in dirt to refresh our roots. My mother sends me Canadian dirt every Christmas.

Yes. Soon it will be all 'Canadians' in control here. The Koreans think they are taking home a suba melon but in fact it's another 'Canadian'.
