personally i don't wipe out entire genres as all bad. depending on my mood it can be pleasant. But with pop anyway, I'm more interested in production quality.

I get to hear the latest Korean pop/hip hop while I'm working out at the gym. I also catch it on Korean MTV sometimes as well.

Did you hear the new one from Baby VOX? "How do you want me baby?" It is painfully bad. I know English isn't their first language but I don't think it matters much. The song is just horrific.

Well then, most K-pop should be fine for you seeing as there often isn't a real instrument on the CDs.

Boxed music.

As far as production quality, it's top-notch.

But in most K-pop, there is really nothing to get in the way of a polished final product. One live vocal track, digitized and filtered beyond recognition.

Only in an analog world is production quality still an issue. K-pop is produced as inexpensively as possible...no hired musicians, fast studio times, digitized vocals so the singer can do one reasonable track and leave.

If you can find a program on TV where the singer isn't lip-syncing, you will notice the HUGE discrepancy between reality and CD.

In this situation, it's more like a public nori-bang. All of the cool dancing and fun are gone because no one could possibly do it while singing. Just standing there looking pretty, singing to mediocrity.

I hate to write off entire genres too, but with radio pop, it's a safe disposal.

i heard one korean band i really really like... l'arc en ciel. they sound like weezer or the knack, only with john entwistle or geezer butler playing bass.

it's a really cool sound.

i think korean hiphop artists are cheaters because everything ends in "YO" here already...

Horrible, horrible stuff. I thought western pop music was bad (it is), but the poster who said (i forget who) that not knowing the words makes it that much more terrible is on to something. I was in a bar last night with some co-workers, friday night, and everyone's listening to this horrible dreck, I seriously thought about jumping through a plate glass window. I would've died a happy man, falling seven stories to my death, shouting the words to a REAL song. Blechh. No, double blechh. I second the notion of force-feeding them some Black Flag records.

As long as it's a music video I find most pop music by female bands in Korea to be good. (only the over 18 bands)

Oneiros, check out a disc called "Deflower" with a variety of metal, death, speed bands from Korea. Some of it's not bad.

And I understand that Korean entertainmant (sic) industry is like a money making thing, all the record companies looking for singers handsome, pretty, well-rehearsed dancer, and actual singing itself is less important. Even singer themself they know that. All 'pop' industries are the same no matter where you go. Just in Korea, for foreigners, for them, that represent another thing to dislike about Korea.
I just wanna ask if anyone really know what the rappers or singers are really saying. Coz if you don't, you're missing big dimension of the music that Korean pop music fans like. Go to the Jazz bars in Shincheon, Taehangno, Hongdae, etc and get some exposure to great quality music played by real musicians. Don't judge all Korean music by what TV show only. Thassall"
