I was responding to Mog and speaking generally about contracts with clause that deduct pay for anything other than legitimate taxes. |

As far as the second contract goes, this is how I feel. I don't know if I am being ridiculous on some of these points.

This is a deal breaker for me. I don't know why they would even put this in here.

The Employee will be given materials to teach to the class. And very little reparation time may be given. The Employee may be expected to work alone without a Korean English teacher�s assistance.

144/4=36 thats 36 classes a week, 7 classes a day....thats a lot of classes.

What about your needs and situation? It seems to scream out to me that they will give you split shifts!
Salary is paid on what day???
Air ticket? WTF! It sounds like they are only supplying a round trip ticket from Washington and it is up to you to get there!

Actually, I read that as an acknowledgement that the OP is currently living in Washington. Look at the user name, Us_in_DC, as in Washington DC, on the eastern seaboard.
If any hagwon were foolish enough to try to save money on a flight by doing that, they would make you fly out of NYC or Los Angeles, where tickets really are significantly cheaper than the rest of the U.S. |

Us in DC: You should really really tell us if these school want you to teach kindy. Kindy + elementary generally results in much more annoying schedules than pure elementary. Also tell us how big the schools are since big schools tend to be a bit more established and dependable.
Second contract:

Irrelevant, you can renegotiate whatever you want if you want to work a second year.

Not a good thing, but something that is apprently becoming more common in Korea.

That's not good. That pull making you refund the airfare could end up hurting you quite a bit if you want to quit within the first six months.

So at the end of your contract they owe you:
-The pay for your last month.
-Your bonus.
-Your housing deposit.
-Your return airfare.
That's a hell of a lot of money to have in what amounts to an unsecure loan to a Korean business.

What does that mean exactly?? If it means that schoolwide holidays exist and are deducted from your 10 days then you probably don't have much control over when you can have your holiday afterall.

Despite the bad spelling this is a GOOD thing. Like I said before you don't get paid for prep so the less they expect you to do the better.

A question: (And I do understand the OPs live in the DC area.)
Most/many contracts, you are given a round-trip ticket to your home. Well, frankly, if I'm living in Korea for a year, that IS my home. I mean, I don't have a house that I rent out or anything. So where do you get the return ticket to? Your last known address? Your parents' house? Have you found bosses to be rather open about this, or do you find yourself with a return ticket to a city you had no intent to return to? |
