By expansion I mean more that each bar needs upgrades and renovations and in particular more room, chairs, breathing space. Especially what concerns me, maximum ONE pool table per bar? Some don't even have any. And look at those tables, getting bumped by people as you take a shot? Long list of people waiting to play on just about any given night... I personally think Itaewon could use a few more nice new establishments and 2 pool tables per bar.

Does anyone have any good recommendations of where to go play pool nearby, that is definately foreigner friendly and at cheap rates (i.e. not those really expensive "drinky" bars)? I would also hate to play at the specialty Korean run places "billiards halls" as I've been in those a couple of times and man the Korean men are downright prejudiced and snobby. I guess if you explicitly went in with a foreigner group then you'd be alright but go in only yourself or one other guy and you're totally out of place unless you get lucky. But those places aren't social scenes anyways. Anyways Itaewon, about the only place in town for any casual fun pool playing and general hanging out just isn't cutting it. What ever happened to Supply vs. Demand balance? Is that a possible good business opportunity waiting? If you ask me Itaewon is a good business opportunity with just about anything - lots of people, packed tight, thousands of foreigners with no place to go, all day and all night, so many people looking for more fun, even Koreans drifting in and out. Again why so much lacking in a place with waiting customers?

Nashville has always been my favourite, two tables and the staff there are always friendly and quick with a refill. Still it aint everybody's cup of tea. You can also get a game at Old Town Seoul and Polly's Kettle House on the hill.

Cheers

Itaewon needs more than an upgrade. More like a total overhaul.

But no one (other than the hooker from ABC club and the German dude from Three Alley who started "Lucky Strike" -- at least I think that guy was in on it) is stupid enough to put a ton of money into bars there. At least not until everyone figures out what will happen to the area in the future when the military moves out.

On the other hand, businesses which cater to Africans and Muslims seem to be doing well. Welcome to the future of Itaewon.

Agree with Gollum, it's the uncertainty that prevents people from making investments there, and those that do invest big there aren't looking for the trade from soldiers from the Yongsan base. I don't agree that it will become a little Pakistan / Nigeria when the army moves out thoughlot of people in the city avoid it because of the troops, a lot of people. I think the place will remain quite cosmopolitan but improve tenfold when the army base is moved.

The place is pathetic. It is filled with the lowest and the dirtiest that the west can ship over here. I mean even the english teachers are scum. The area has the highest level of crime in korea. People are at their worst. I think it will be a better place when they tear all the crap down and just fill the place with apartments. Every year those apartments move closer and closer, and I am happy.

Mate! Chill out, there is something for everyone in Itaewon, you don't have to get loaded in Seoul pub, start a fight and take a ho. There are some nice places too. It's changed vastly in the last few years as well, nice new restaurants opening, bars etc. nice, chilled places and just pricey enough to keep out the jarheads. For me, there aren't many places in the whole of Korea with a nicer atmosphere and nicer music than Bar Nana. No crime in there mate, honest. I don't go there more than once or twice a month, but I always have a good time, and I never see any trouble. Never.

There are also some really cheap apartments for rent in the area.

People do not pour money into bars and restaurants there because they don't need to. They are making plenty of money with out doing that.

There really isn't anything left in Iteawon that you can't get elsewhere in Korea. Used to be shopping that the shopping in Iteawon was good (lots of made in Korea factory rejects). Koreans are now more aware of foreign brands, so that stuff
