I am very @$^# off at a gym a tried to join today. I was told they do not allow foreigners to join. I was very angry with them. Yes there are other gyms that i could join but this one has everything i need.

My question is this. Is there something i can do about this? If so who do i need to see regarding this matter?

Thanks... all help would be great..

Do you really think that technically (not reality) that they have the right to refuse service because of race? That is actually what they are doing.

I think I'd look up the Ministry of Justice's website and see if there is an address or phone number.

If there is, you might just happen to drop the phrase "hub of NE Asia" in your question about being barred from a health club because of your citizenship.

This is a silly post and all of the answers are self evident. Why would you want to join a gym if they have been openly racist towards you? Are you a sucker for abuse? Also, why do you want to know what you can "do about it"? Do you think it is your right and place to teach them a lesson on their "backward" ways?

Get over it and find another gym. Confused

Sure np, thats easy to do. Um just stating a fact... yeah thats right its a fact that we are discriminated in Korea and um sure in most other countries too...

Having that said, i was once a newby on this forum. And if it wasnt for other peoples comments, good, bad, stupid... or whatever, then i might not have learned as much as i have since being here...OK!!

Nonetheless... thanks for your replies!! Smile

Well, you can do one of two things:
1) accept it
2) confront it

In the U.S., there is still plenty of racism. However, let's pretend the Blacks just decided not to "get all miffed about racism" and accept it as "a fricken fact of life." What do you think their situation would be like now?

...truth time...

Things probably won't ever be perfect between different races. At least not until long after I'm dead. But, if you complain loud enough and long enough (maybe be a bit confrontational on the side), eventually things tend to change. If you don't do anything...well, you're partially to blame for your own misfortune.

I think Real Reality probably knows who to call right now. Granted, it won't change anything, but it's one more complaint that the city will hear. Eventually someone will wise up.

Maybe we need to start picketing places like that...who would want to go to a health club with a bunch of scary White people in front of it? Laughing

Real Reality probably knows who to call but he decided not to so that he could spend some more time looking up irrelevant articles for these forums.

I dont think he is always negative. The question is why beat a dead horse. Nothing is going to change, so why waste your time and energy trying to change it. Just accept it and move on.

Do a search and read my previous posts and you will see where you err. I have helped many people on this board, leant support, shown great generousity, and provided insight. At times, you're right, I attack people on certain issues or when they are not using enough rational/common sense.

I can only think of one person on these forums who could possibly suggest that I am always negative and that is Real Reality. Hmmm... isn't it interesting that you said that though. Do I smell foot odour? Wink

Perhaps, you could write to some government organization interested in business with foreigners. You might indicate your intentions of telling all your family members and friends about avoiding Korea and Korean products.

Foreigners Experience Difficulties in Living in Korea
Overall living conditions, including education, housing, medical care, transportation, immigration, and access to the Internet are pointed to as inconveniences. Not only inconveniences caused by different systems and customs in Korea, but also special discriminating practices, such as the practice of submitting two years of monthly rent in advance like a deposit, which is required of foreigners just because they are foreigners, are ubiquitous.

I don't see why you can't adopt a two-pronged approach...find another gym and don't worry about it at the same time as you phone the MOJ and see if you can give them hell. that way you have the best of both worlds. Those that say you can't change Korea haven't looked into its history...don't forget it was a near dictatorship just twenty years ago.

private businesses DO NOT have the right to discriminate based on race.

you absolutely within your limits to bring this to the authority's attention.

a few friends and i went to a nightclub recently and were told, Koreans ONLY.

that is wrongheaded. i can understand a dress code - but not a race code.

korea has been insulated from outsiders from so long, they need a few lessons about equality and multiculturalism. they are willing to accept the affluence that global business brings them, but they are not ready to accept global values of tolerance and diversity.
