The author of the book, Richard Hooker (a pseudonym - I think his real name was Dr Walter Dishell), didn't care for the TV show. He thought it was too liberal.

He didn't mind the money he got for each episode. He said the money was like he was being paid for an operation that he didn't have to do. He wrote a sequel called M*A*S*H* in Maine, that was better than the first book. There was a series of books written after the TV show became popular, but he didn't write them.

One of the greatest shows too ever hit TV. Never missed it. Miss it now though.

Here's a meaningless tidbit: my husband's uncle Trace Galloway performed that guitar bit of "Suicide is Painless" for the intro. He was also one of Elvis Presley's pall-bearers.

our high school drama club wrote and directed a full length stage show/musical called m*a*s*h*e*d. complete with squirting blood, docile koreans and loud obnoxiuos docters! i was a kiwi soldier. and the cross dresse guy was a chilian exchange student named chiko who pulled it off something wicked! used to watch it when i was a kid, but the re-runs just seemed odd, to me anyway.

I think the links posted regarding SK's suicide rate just might be the most relevant reply to my original posting, though I'm quite thrilled to have a relative of the dude who actually did the guitar piece for the tv theme post a reply

Whether it was 'really about Vietnam' seems somehwat irrelevant.

Although I can't match having a relative playing guitar on the theme song, I think I deserve a little reflected glory, too.

If Radar were a real person, he would have gone to my high school. Do any of you know the name of his 'hometown'? (It's real, even if he isn't.)
