| Suicide was the dentist's nic in the movie. Dear old dad rented the flick just before I came over. |
Correction: the dentist's nick was Painless Pole: as in he worked painlessly ('cause he gassed you first) and he was Polish. Double entendre: he also had a huge schlong (good to see yiddish slang is filter-proof). The suicide part comes from his wanting to kill himself because (based on his inability to get his legendary pole up on one occasion) he believes he has 'become' a homosexual. Brilliantly played by John Schuck, the character was dropped for the TV series (natch).
If all you've seen is the series, see the movie. It's MUCH darker, more graphically critical of war, and the radio/PA announcements are hysterical. (The arrival of a parka-d Trapper in the swamp & ensuing conversation is one of my all-time favourite movie scenes.) |

Suicides Hit Record High in 2003
What is more problematic is that suicide topped the causes of deaths for 20- and 30-somethings last year.

Rising suicides a bad sign
A high suicide rate means that there is something wrong with the well-being of a society. Korea is a nation heavily influenced by Confucian tradition, which forbids a person from hurting his body, obtained from his parents, in any way. But the recent rise in the suicide rate shows that our society has become seriously ill.

The author of the book, Richard Hooker (a pseudonym - I think his real name was Dr Walter Dishell), didn't care for the TV show. He thought it was too liberal.
He didn't mind the money he got for each episode. He said the money was like he was being paid for an operation that he didn't have to do. He wrote a sequel called M*A*S*H* in Maine, that was better than the first book. There was a series of books written after the TV show became popular, but he didn't write them. |

[quote="Daphne"]I'm sure any American Adult is quite familiar with the show M*A*S*H from the late 70s and early 80s, but for many who did not see the film from 1970 starring Donald Sutherland, and hence have only heard the acoustic version of the famous theme song at the start of each show, it may come as a surprise to know that the song is titled 'Suicide is Painless.'
[quote]
Here's a meaningless tidbit: my husband's uncle Trace Galloway performed that guitar bit of "Suicide is Painless" for the intro. He was also one of Elvis Presley's pall-bearers. |

Kellerman or Swit?
I'd rather have Lt. Dish. |

| our high school drama club wrote and directed a full length stage show/musical called m*a*s*h*e*d. complete with squirting blood, docile koreans and loud obnoxiuos docters! i was a kiwi soldier. and the cross dresse guy was a chilian exchange student named chiko who pulled it off something wicked! used to watch it when i was a kid, but the re-runs just seemed odd, to me anyway. |

I think the links posted regarding SK's suicide rate just might be the most relevant reply to my original posting, though I'm quite thrilled to have a relative of the dude who actually did the guitar piece for the tv theme post a reply
Whether it was 'really about Vietnam' seems somehwat irrelevant. |

mindmetoo,
Did you read this?
"most relevant reply"
Daphne wrote in the original post,
"...'Suicide is Painless.'
It seems both an ironic and appropriate song for a story based on foreigners working in Korea--kind of like the saying that 'life imitates art.'' |

Although I can't match having a relative playing guitar on the theme song, I think I deserve a little reflected glory, too.
If Radar were a real person, he would have gone to my high school. Do any of you know the name of his 'hometown'? (It's real, even if he isn't.) |
