| What a load of bollocks. Seoul better than Tokyo ... oh my God, what a pile of delusional tripe. Seoul is a stinky backwater full of backward peasants. |

Seoul does have similarities to Tokyo MUCH more than any other city in the world. Nothing of Seoul seems like Beijing or Shanghai or any European, North American, South American, African, or Middle Eastern city.
But when you look at pictures of massive ROTARIES where all the roads converge in a massive mess.. it looks like just what Tokyo does.. set up with massive department stores.. and all that junk. Complete with the same standard western fastfood chains.
Scratch briefly below the surface though.. and very very different places. |

The road layout is because the Japanese were the ones to initially lay out the roads in Seoul . It is very Japanese style to have all roads leading into a big roundabout or use these roundabout in a system of roundabout(like spokes on a wheel).
Jinhae in southern Korean is a great example of japanese road patterns. Ironically enough, the city where they celebrate the cherry blossom festival, which was an imported tree from Japan. Now they have a day to celebrate the Japanese tree.
No wonder they are confused about Seoul becoming Tokyo |

I always thought Seoul as Tokyo Lite. You can blow all kinds of holes in any comparison but really. They're huge cities, big subway systems, lots of people, Asian, but with Western comforts. Seoul is cheaper. Twice when I came to Seoul as a tourist I loved it, just loved it. And that's why I came back as a teacher.
The writer should have warned readers that if they stay at the Shilla in summer not to expect air conditioning... And the writer seems to have spent too much time in Itaewon. You're visiting Seoul. Why go to Ameri-ho town? You might want to visit Itaewon for a good laugh at the worst of American culture if you're spending more than a week in Seoul. But a week stay in Seoul there are far more interesting places to go.

I've just had two weeks in London and Birmingham and have to fly back to Seoul (less) on Saturday. Seoul doesn't compare to Birmingham anymore, let alone a truly international city like London or Tokyo. Man, I'm depressed. Still... only 8 more months, eh |

It not the city. It's people like you that makes it depressing.

I love the setup of the city of Seoul. Love everything about it. I really only sometimes wish it were inhabited by different or a more variety of people. Love the convenience of it, and the many backstreet alleys everywhere. Also like all the things available - 24 hour bars, convenience stores, noraebangs, videobangs, pcbangs, restaurants, etc.
Great way to structure a city - definetely no complaints on that aspect here! |

| How is the transportation around and out of Seoul between 12:30 AM and 5:00 AM? Have you ever tried to get a bus out of Seoul at 1:00 AM? |

There may be backstreet alleys everywhere but I just wish there were more interesting places in those alleys, rather than just more kimbab stores, pc bangs and nore bangs. The lack of variety in korea is one of it's biggest negatives |

| You know you never hear koreans calling their city the "New Tokyo" There are many people who travel back and forth too, so if this were true you would at least here about it in subdude conversations. I can't say much about the writter of the article, but he is clearly working the the feel good vibe on energy the many cities show. Is Seoul really like Tokyo? |
