You ever seen 'Demolition Man' on cable here? They cut out all of the references to Taco Bell and replace them with Pizza Hut! And if you've ever watched that movie you know that that is no easy feat. (the movie takes place in the future and there's a running gag that Taco Bell has become the classiest restaurant around.) This doesn't just involve changing the voices, but also cutting some scenes of the food and even digitally inserting a Pizza Hut sign.

I was totally shocked by it because you sit there and watch Sly Stallone dropping the f-word with no edit, but then he says 'taco bell' and they change it. I couldn't figure out why they would do that until i realized they are both own by the same corporation. I guess the company figured since there are no Taco Bells here, they shouldn't let their advertising dollars go to waste and lobbied to have it all changed to Pizza Hut. Isn't it amazing? I didn't know companies could do that.

Rent the really old tapes (mid-'80s) and you'll get a treat about halfway through: a public announcement about how we should fight the spread of pornographic material because it poisons young Koreans's pure minds...and it's a long one too.

The worst cut I ever saw was 'The Last Boy Scout' showed on British TV in the 90s. They don't bother so much with sex or violence but what they really can't stand is *swearing*. So just about every single line of that movie was FUBAR, e.g. 'Get your hands off me, muddy funster!'.

Censorship blows. I put it down to their being a fascist state not so long ago - along with everything else bad in this country.

DVDs in Korea really piss me off.

Movies like 'Wild Orchid', 'Basic Instinct', 'Bad Lieutenant', etc. all have their money shots either clipped out completely or blurred. These are ones that I've seen on video here, and I was actually kind of impressed to see a 90 minute movie in less than 70 minutes.

As for DVDs, it's interesting how blatant some of the edits are. The aforementioned boogie nights example, but also earlier on in the film when Rollergirl prepares to do Marky Mark, the film zooms in just enough to see the awful pixellation and hide her cootchie. Not that it makes a big deal, but it's jarring.

The Hannibal thing I knew from people who'd gone to see it in the theatres. And regarding Falling Down, I'm surprised it made it to Korea at all!

The government in Korea is really into propaganda and mind control. I've noticed that recently they have stopped the access to the main north Korean website.

This censoring is dumb. Lot's of countries do it and it is just silly. I remember reading a list in the Frank Zappa autobiography that had all the songs that were banned during (I hazily recall) the Vietnam era. 'Puff the magic dragon' was banned as it was associated with heroin use.

Governments can be really stiupid.

Is 'Midnight Cowboy' for sale on DVD here? I owned the Korean VHS tape four years ago (it was unedited, by the way), but it doesn't look like the DVD is available.
