Today I bought 'Ran,' and found out after arriving home that the DVD, licensed by Universal and Studio Canal, has no English subtitles. Similarly, 'Ghost in the Shell 2' (Japanese) and 'Ong Bak' (Thai) don't have English subtitles either.
Does this mean that, in the future, I'll have to order all my non-Korean and non-English language DVDs from North America?
What a piss off. I really was in the mood for some Kurosawa.

| even more frustrating is that most dvds have korean subtitles for the supplements.. but the korean dvds dont do it in english. |

Because Universal owns the rights and distributes the movie. And because English is a global language -- and some Korean students of English (my wife one of them) use English subtitles from DVDs to aid in their studies.
But, most importantly, they should have English subs because I bloody want to watch me some 'Ran'! The actual DVD reads that (oddly) Korean and Brazillian Portugese are the only subtitled languages, but it is sold with a guard cover that doesn't let the buyer become aware of the fact until after purchasing and opening it.
Also oddly, it's advertised to play on region 2,3, and 4 players. And the opening credits are in Japanese and French.
And the blurb on the back proclaims, in all it's Konglish glory, "A Masterpiece of the Akira Kurosawa!"
Not good times. Especially since the NA disc is US $31.99.

Do you think that maybe that merchant got those discs from a warehouse somewhere other than Korea? For one, I have never seen a disc in Korea with Portugese or Brazillian subtitles and it is very strange that the opening credits have French. It is my feeling that if you purchased this disc somewhere else, you may actually get English subtitles on the disc. |
It's the same disc currently for sale at Kyobo, etc. It's not a bootleg; it's an under-the-radar, cheap appropriation for the Korean market. But even the Kurosawa bootlegs for the Korean market that I own have English subs and English-language critics' commentaries. I may be paranoid, but my guess is that 'Ran' -- and the increasing number of DVDs sans English subs -- is a matter of erasure rather than addition.

totoro, princess oknokosomethingorother, and spirited away had english subtitles. just read the back first. it should say.
I watched Ong Bak and really liked it eventhoough i didn't understand a word of it. |
