Seoul is a great example. Didn't most of us pronounce it as a single syllable until we came to Korea? If we're going to use Korean, we should use it right. |
Sorry to come back to this after such time, but I was just checking my credit card statement and a recent payment for an Asiana flight read "Asiana Air, Seowool".
I'd never seen it written this way before, but it's obviously an attempt at correcting foreigners' bad pronunciation of the name.
Romanized Korean is often as bad as hangeulized English (or Konglish) and should be avoided unless necessary.
Seoul, Seowool, Seooul, Seoool... none are the same as . |

what i really don't get and is a pet peeve of mine is when people use a romanised korean word when they could just use the english word. the most common example of this is 'waegookin' why not just say foreigner?
or sometimes i'll see something like 'yesterday i met my friend at seoul yok' why not just say seoul station?
if hanguel is necessary then fine but the use of romanised korean in place of english when it's totally unnecessary is rather odd at best methinks. |

| because weigook-in sounds a lot cooler than foreigner and people just get used to saying seoul yeok as opposed to station (which is longer to say i might point out). As far as typing them in english instead of korean, some of us haven't figured out the korean keyboard (i'm in america, it's a guessing game of letters for me since they aren't on my keyboard). |
