What are you folks doing with the recent requests from schools for sealed transcripts as part of the application package?
"REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
- Current resume and cover letter
- Copy of undergraduate and graduate diplomas
- Set of official, sealed undergraduate and graduate transcripts (mailed to us directly from the university)
- Copies of personal data pages from your passport and current visa (if you are currently teaching in Korea)
- 2-3 recent letters of reference
- 3 passport sized color photos taken recently
- All documents should be submitted no later than June 24, 2005
Documentation should be mailed to:
Cheon Myeong-ho
Sungkyun Language Institute
Sungkyunkwan University
300, Cheoncheon-dong, Jangan-gu, Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, 440-746, South Korea
E-mail: [email protected]
Phone: 82-31-290-5231 "
I think it's pretty bogus. I still send copies, and am fully prepared to deliver the real goods if/when I'm hired. But now I'm wondering if not providing them from the get-go might damage my chances of getting the job in the first place.

It's not bogus. It's not the school, it's Immigration. You can't apply without them. It's a new law. Sorry, Charlie.
Scroll down and look at the Yonsei, Wonju campus ad:

********In Accordance with new Korean employment legislation, all Korean schools require applicants to present their sealed University Transcripts. As for anyone interested in working at yonsei University, the first step in the application process is to ask your university to send your sealed transcripts directly to following address.*******

I've just ordered 30 copies from my uni.
I think asking to get them mailed directly to your prospective employer from your uni is asking a bit much: time consuming for a start. presenting them in an unopened, sealed and postmarked envelope should be sufficient.
Are all the schools asking for them to be sent directly to them from the uni, or is it just this one? because its becoming a bit impractical now...I mean it takes up to a month to arrive. |

One thing's for sure... don't send them a darned thing until you know you have the job.
I can just see the schools and recruiters wanting to take advantage of this one -- thinking they can lock you in. |

This could be interesting. I know of at least two Canadian uni's that will not mail out transcripts to a third party.
whats next? an original copy of your degree in a sealed envelope with a DNA encoded microchip? |

| I half wonder if immigration isn't licking their chops at the prospects of nailing teachers and fining them for working early before the transcripts come in the mail. |

I contacted my university, and it seems they will only post them to me personally, not to another person, which seems reasonable enough. After all, they are MY transcripts. They said that if somebody wants verification of my degree and transcripts, all they have to do is contact the registrar at the university.
What ifyou send, say a recruiter your transcripts, and upon receiving them, they open them by mistake (quite possible, as I'm sure they receive a lotof mail daily)? Would they then be worthless?
Although it's a different scenario, but would you like a copy of your credit card to be mailed to somebody you don't know? |

I think you have it backwards. You can't get the job until you send them transcripts. How can they lock you in? It's just a piece of paper, order several copies, keep them on hand. It's the new way.

So, you want them to crack down on illegal Canadians but making the process more legit is too difficult for you?

They don't need to come to the employer from your uni. Delivered by you in sealed envelopes with the uni seal on the back flap of the envelope is good enough.

So the Sungkyunkwan University job was posted today, and the closing date is June 24. They expect that sealed transcripts from universities abroad are going to be there in nine days? I'm really having a hard time with this requirement. What's wrong with applying with copies, and sending the originals if one gets the job? The K. gov't has really gone overboard here.

Okay then, check this ad out: http://www.eslcafe.com/jobs/korea/index.cgi?read=16443
Kyungpook National University
please submit the following:
1) Resume w/cover letter and photo (please mention where you saw this advert)
2) Copy of your passport page w/photo
3) Copies of all degrees & transcripts
4) Three (3) letters of recommendation (personal and/or professional)
Now this is reasonable.
Ahhhhhh. (slowly changing back into Banner). |
