Well I'm having a bitch of a time deleting Norton from my computer, and the last one still left loads of crap behind after I FINALLY got it uninstalled.

So wots worse, a virus or Norton?

Norton, slows my computer immeasurably opening new things and tries to block ANYTHING connecting to the internet (including Firefox and IE) until I fudged the settings.

I know you can get some nasty viruses but I think NAV ranks up there with best of them

Grr

Norton sucks soooo much. We had that on our computer at school. Dumped it, thank goodness!

Avast! is the only way to go, and it's free! www.avast.com

I love that program, and you can set it so you hardly see it running.

Just let it run in the background and scan for viruses every so often.

In order to completely remove Norton AntiVirus from your PC, you'll need to download a free tool from Symantec! Confused

"It works but slows down the computer greatly"

Full user opinion
I installed Norton 2005 on three different computers. Each of them slowed down greatly and none of them are "slow" machines. I will need to increase memory on one machine or remove Norton due to the performance. All of these machines were using 2004 without this noticable problem. The performance is so bad that I will start looking for an alternative even though I just purchased Norton 2005.

It's funny-
Norton and McAfee were pretty much the only games in town 10 years ago (or at least the only ones worth talking about), and Anti-virus debates were always Norton vs. McAfee; I imagine they both still have their longterm corporate customers who are pretty much on the hook to continue with them, but it's funny that neither of these ever seems to make the top 3 these days at least as far as home pc use is concerned. I guess that's what happens when you rest too easy on your laurels.

I would say that having Norton and thinking you are safe (when you're actually still quite vulnerable), is much worse because when it comes up with nothing on a scan, you think you are okay and don't try to fix an undetected infection.

Have you tried out Mcafee 2005? It's nothing to scoff at. I've used full versions of most of the AV and Firewalls out there and, IMO, using McAfee firewal and AV together will make your computer VERY secure. Trend Micro (PcCillin), ALWIL (Sygate), Grisoft (AVG), and Zonelabs (Zone Alarm), all make good AV scanners or firewalls, however, as a bundle, none are 100% in both areas. McAfee is the only bundle suite that I have found so far that has a strong AV scanner and Firewall. I also don't mind paying for it as I feel that strong security software is always worth the money I dole out for it.

I guess Norton have been around for a few years now. They have to make their product bigger and better with every version. I agree it's now too big and invasive. I still haven't deleted it completely from my comp (I'm with Grisoft AVG now. Works great).

How many applications are like that?

Programmers write a nifty program; It gets improved after 1 year; next they add features; next, it's a monster out of control!!!

Norton sucks, but viruses (viruii?) suck even harder.

Netscape Navigator, cerca 1998, now THAT was a beggar to remove.

We use McAfee at work.
When '98 was the MS O/S du jour I swore by Norton.

These days I use:
AVG free version
Spybot S & D
Zone Alarm 2.6 (older version)
And the firewall & packet sniffer of my router.

It's interesting how opinions differ from time to time and from location to location.

A few months back I looked into which anti virus software to install and most people/sites I queried recommended Nortons. So, that's what I installed. Now, popular opinion seems to be against Nortons.

Incidentally I'm having problems with my internet connection dropping out intermittently. Some people say that Nortons, in particular it's firewall, may be responsible. So I've disabled that.

Life sure wasn't meant to be easy, was it ???

My primary computer has norton and my secondary has avast. Depending on how I like Avast, I may switch over the next time I reinstall windows on the primary.
