Things were looking good, the other 5 parties were optimistic, but for the umpteenth time NK screws everyone else over.

Here's a paraphrase of something I read in the IHT paper last weekend.

(In an interview)

Nk guy: "All our problems are caused by the world's hostility towards us..."

I laughed out loud at that.

The best thing that the world can do is ignore North Korea. By that I mean, you don't exist do you? No rice for you! You need oil? Well, we all do.Who are you anyway?

Blockade the norks, put huge pressure on the Chinese-who are pissed off with them anyway. No more extortion. SK should pull all investment out of the Kangseong. You can't negotiate with these scum.

No more aid, unless it is accountable. This is why the WFP has lost so many sponsors, there are too many deserving candidates for food, why give it to a belligerant bully who cant feed its people because they like to spend all their money on the 'military first policy'.

No more food. A trade embargo. Refusal of all 'civilised' countries who deal with the nork scumbags to be admitted into any FTA agreement.

The Nork government needs to be punished. The people wont suffer any more than they are suffering now.

Big hairy bollox to North Korea. If they want to be treated like a civilised country then they should start acting like one.

Let's get a petition together to stop any more money flowing to the most despicable regime in the world. This regime makes good old Saddam look like father xmas.

Sactions are way more effective then open warfare. They should stop delivering all aid. It would take less then a couple years and DPRK would be reduced into a wasteland. Even if ROK still give aid it wouldn't be enough sustain them, best thing you could hope for would be a revolution.

It's not even worth following the stories anymore. A non-decision is suitable for all since only action will bring anything about.

Do Koreans seem to blame others for problems more than others from various countries? Do Koreans avoid taking appropriate responsibility?

Consider this quote:
"Koreans tend to think the problem is caused by someone else, that it does not lie within the Self," Professor Chey Jean-yung said. Just about every Korean suffers from soul-deadening mental, physical or emotional tiredness. "But first of all we must do complete self-examination. Our history testifies that Korean people have lacked serious self-examination," Professor Rhee Dong-shick explained. Due to political hard times, dirty money and competition people feel that they are not being treated nicely.

-as I say, brinkmanship, stubborness, and a deep seated unwillingness to co-operate with any foreign idea/initiative forms the basis of the korean character.

Here's a view of North Korea's behavior in terms of receiving aid and 'trading' by a Russian analyst.

From the above article

Quote:
Over time, the payment issue had become ingrained in the thinking of North Korean leaders. It seems they came to assume that foreigners should be willing to accept the North Korean trade conditions and would be not paid at all if North Korea was especially short of money.

N Korea is what you get when you run a country like a hagwon.

That's my favorite quote of the week.

Quote:

That's pretty much what the world did till the Norks started building nukes. So that policy is out the window. Hard to ignore 'em if they can sell a nuke to anyone who hates you.

A blockade sounds OK till you realize the South won't go along with it. They've already said so. Thank you Pres. Noh.

Captain Corea is right. China (and S. Korea) are what are keeping that place afloat. And China may see things more in terms of swapping NK for Taiwan.

I fully believe that the failure of North Korea would

1. Hurt South Korean pride

2. End up costing South Koreans more than they are willing to pay on their own.

They will expect the US and the world to pick up as much of the tab as possible, while the Chaebols rush in to suck up as much land and as many resources as possible.

All one has to do to understand the future of Korea is to study what's being taught in the schools. Things like,

"Kim Jeong Il is a good man who is looking for peace."

and

"The USA just wants to keep Korea separated so they don't become a stronger superpower."

I wish I had the link to the Japanese article that interviewed these kids who said this. NEVER forget that, in many Korean minds, they're more interested in Northerners being a part of the family than letting any other race get inroads here. And it comes down to exactly that ... race.

I disagree. I would argue that the DPRK position in the current talks has been both politically astute and ideologically sound.

The DPRK has indicated that there has been no particular shift away from the core of Songun politics: the development of a military first, nuclear equipped, socialist state.

In return, the DPRK (will likely) receive: electricity cables, crossborder railroad connections, shipping port connections, export food, Kaesong investment and a range of other material items.

And why are they in need of such things?
