Korean Students' Dislike of Japan Not Shared by Japanese Counterparts
Korean students feel least friendly toward Japan, while Japanese students placed Korea as No. 2 on their list of nations they feel friendly towards after the United States, a survey has found.

Korean students cited past colonial rule, history distortions and the Dokdo issue as reasons why they did not feel friendly toward Japan, while Japanese students said they felt close to Korea because it is their neighbor, they see Korean entertainers on TV and because the two nations have much in common.

The survey showed that 44.9 percent of Korean students chose Japan as the nation they felt least friendly toward, followed by the United States with 42.8 percent and China with 7.5 percent. Japanese students named North Korea as the nation they felt least close to with 43 percent, followed by China (7.9 percent), Iraq (6.1 percent) and the United States (1.5 percent).

Korean students cited Turkey as the nation they felt closest to with 16.1 percent due to the "friendship they shared during the Korea-Japan World Cup in 2002," followed by the Netherlands (15.1 percent), citing "coach Gus Hiddink," who led Korea's national soccer team during the World Cup, and "flowers." North Korea came in third with 13.6 percent.

Keep in mind that Turkey at the time of the Korean War had just joined NATO and they sent the 3rd largest troop contingent to Korea. Mayn older Koreans have a very deep respect for Turkey and have not forgotten their great contribution to freedom. I guess they passed it down.

I personally love Turkey for their wonderful Sufi tradition~ love those Swirling Dirvishes! And the food! Don't get me started, I get hungry just thinking about it!

I knew that Koreans love Turkey but I never would have guessed that it would be the highest. I guessed that Holland would be first 'cas of the football.

Interesting as it was students that the report asked not older people who would remember the war. But citing on the friendship from the World Cup isn't enough to be placed as the highest in my opinion. Also Holland is second due to the World Cup as well.

I still can't understand why Koreans love the North after the war and abductions of South Koreans. Would they stand up if the North invaded tomorrow? Obviously some wouldn't!

Also ask them the capital (it ain't Istanbul) and other questions...

Whats wrong with Koreans. Least friendly with US at 42.8 percent. Why do they then go to American company establishments like Pizza hut, Starbucks etc. Man Americans should just end their alliance with ROK and leave South Koreans to fend for them selves.

Right, they hate Japan for saying they've already appologized for the occupation (they have), but they love a country where the current government won't even admit its past genocidal tendencies. Kids.

Koreans are essentially an island nation, cut off from any real/genuine knowledge of/ contact with other countries.

No wonder they base their flimsy allegiances on such things as "We feel close to Holland because Guus Hiddinck coached our team". Its clutching at straws.

Because their impressions of other nations are still basically a blank page, we should also realise that the way we act will probably tar our entire nation with the same characteristics in the eyes of any Korean onlookers.

I would imagine a contrasting poll of turkish students would reveal a difference rather quickly here.

But from my experience Korean students don't feel particularly close to any country. I think this is shown by them choosing a place that they have little trade/knowledge/modern connection with as no.1.

Who doesn't love turkey? Man, I'm gonna miss my family's Thanksgiving dinner this year, I could almost cry.

One thing that I've learned, is that when a Turkish guy refers to you as "my friend", well, that means that he's just about to set you up for a scam or rip you off.

So yeah, in a sense, they are friends.
