I have a question that I am curious of - after reading the below link.

http://www.middle-east-online.com/english/?id=14370

Is Mr Livingstone a muslim? I don't mean this is in a negative way, it just seemed that he has been quite strongly supportive of the muslim community and its rights. I was just curious thats all, I don't really know much about him or his policies.

I was hoping someone could maybe explain him better to me.

Ok. Does anuone know what policies he stands for? How has his policies and standards served London?

BY THE WAY, A FORUM FOR ENGLISH TEACHERS SHOULD BE THE ONE PLACE WE CAN GET TOGETHER TO DISCUSS EDUCATIONAL THINGS. OR IS THIS JUST A GRIPE AND PERSONAL ATTACK FORUM.

I don't think the two things are mutually exclusive.

I don't know all that much about "Red Ken" as he's known- but the two policies of his that I've heard of are:

* introducing a congestion fare for central London, not popular with some people for obvious reasons, some people I know who live in London say the traffic situation is much better though
* a flat 1 quid (2,000 won) bus fare across the (entire?) city

generally (and this is just an impression, not borne out by anything as technical as research) I think he's popular- he certainly appears to make ballsy decisions for the common good.

Here's a statement from 7 July- the day of the London bombings.

This is his 'vision for London'
* strong and diverse economic growth
* social inclusivity to allow all Londoners to share in London's future success
* fundamental improvements in environmental management and use of resources.

He's not a Muslim, but he's very pro-Palestinian (in common with most of the British left). He used to be very left wing, but as mayor he embraced pragmatism.

He's also involved in a long-running feud with Associated Newspapers, so take anything you read about him in their titles with a serious pinch of salt.

He used to be considered a real loonie, but he does appear to be running London very well (with occasional loonie moments).

Take it easy man. That was a tounge in cheek jape aimed at the Daves community in general.

I find it difficult to believe you would take that as a personal attack.

Sorry it came off that way for you.

Fair enough. I do feel that the ability to have a serious discussion about issues with well educated people is often undermined by the abuse and disinformation and divergence from a topic, forcing oneself to struggle to find the good points among all the rubbish. (many times I am guilty of being a part of the problem and not a solution).
