My take on all this is that it's better to show up to class drunk than hungover. When hungover, one really cannot be bothered and classes suck balls. When drunk, at least there's some semblance of happiness and 'getting into it' a bit. I know that kids' education improved due to my being mildly intoxicated once, but if I'm hungover and feel like a flaming sack of *beep*, all I want to do is be in bed! Whether you're as sober as a judge or as drunk as a lord, quality of class is the criteria for judgement. If you think "well it's impossible to do a good class with alcohol in your system" some people have different tolerence levels and it may not be true for others even if it is for you.

Anyway, I think the real issue is the age of your students. I teach kindie and primary and can't afford a lapse in reaction time or judgement (or someone ends up hurt and crying from a fist fight). If I were teaching adults who don't have the desire to jump off tables or throw siscors (or exacto knives) at each other, I would afford myself A glass of wine with lunch.

I couldn't say that Babtangee has any sort of "drinking problem" based on what he's said here, and I also believe based on studies I've read (solely concerning red wine) that having a drink every day is beneficial (not just "tolerable") for the body.

However, his posts here in response to Homer's have been mildly amusing.

There should be no alcohol in school and teachers should not drink outside of the school if they are going to be in charge of classes after they come back.

Teachers should also be responsible enough not to drink so much through the course of an evening that they are either horribly hungover or still reeking of alcohol. It is that kind of thing that ruins the reputation of the teachers who do work hard and are professional in their manner and approach to teaching.

There is drinking a few beers at home, or a glass or three of wine, but when it gets to 2am and you are deciding whether or not to go the norae bang, whilst forgetting that you have class at 8.45am, then, in my opinion, you are a highly un-professional teacher and shouldn't be allowed in a classroom.

As long as you're not a violent or angry drunk I don't really see a problem with it. Still, I'd rather do it after school in the staff room or in the male teachers' tent at school camp. Having a conversation with a bunch of kids at school camp after six or seven Hite's seemed to go swimmingly, so perhaps in the classroom wouldn't be so bad, either.

Babtangee, your avatar reminds me of Stripe from Gremlins. God, that animal is downright putrid, and I love dogs.

I went to class once hungover, but I didn't think I was that bad off. Bought the kiddies french fries from the McDonald's across the street, and halfway through my bag of fries, they came right back up again. The kids thought it was great- they all wanted to check-out the trashcan. The assistant director seemed pretty impressed, too I was mortified, and never drank that much again the night before work.
