Apparently this is a new thing the Korean government has done, since this past summer..
Friends of mine are trying to get an international banking card so they can use back home..
I have once since i got it last year.. Why would the government do this?
The only reason I can think of is that, the k-govt want to limit the amount of money being taken out of the country... although, we can still wire transfer home.. it just doesn't make sense..
Can anyone explain this phenomenon..??
haha.. omg.. look at those spelling mistakes.. hehe

It's because illegal workers who can't legally wire money out of the country without getting a bank stamp in thier passports right next to their tourist visa stamp could still get the cash out via the international bank cards.
If you try to leave the country with a tourist visa and ten shimman stamps you're busted, but it's no problem with an international bank card (or five) in your wallet. |

At least one Korean bank I know of actively target markets illegal workers for its money transfer service. |

I've never brought my passport to the bank and was still able to wire money from my account by just showing my ARC. |

It's a typical Korean approach to a problem...instead of thinking and doing something logical, they just take a hammer to it and beat the shit out of it until it makes 'em feel good..."look, we're taking care of the problem!"
makes no sense though...if you are here working legally then you should have access to YOUR money!!!
They're fukin' idiots |

Gideon,
Can' t be nothing with the government......Korea isn't that organized...
I went in a week ago and got an international debit card. Hana bank.
No problem....3,000 WON per withdraw. Fine. No problem.
Then speaking with colleagues, find out my visa checking card will also work abroad (it has the plus sign). So I have two, will send the other home for withdrawls...
So you are wrong about the govt. Discretionary banking thingeeeee, typical Korean , seat of the pants, maybe with this guy at this bank and not at the same bank, different branch....
My two cents worth.

Why don't you folks go to the one bank that is the best for foreigners : KEB, Korea Exchange Bank?
They are absolutely the best bank in Korea. They will give you an international bank card. |
