|
|
Hi folks, I'm a recent university graduate looking to teach English in Korea. I realize that I certainly face obstacles as my parents are of East Indian Descent. I was born in Canada, and I am a native speaker with a typical north-american accent.
I was wondering if anyone had any leads or knew of any recruiters or schools who have hired or are accepting Asian-Canadians?
I have applied and given my resume to several recruiters and individual schools and agencies but have got no replies or offers.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! |

Being a whitey I can only guess but. I'd think the silver lining is that if a school hires that should up the chance that they're a good place that cares at least as much about education as profits. |

Why come? You know they will be rude and stupid to you. They will stare and make unkind comments and talk about you. Don't come..you have been honestly warned. Koreans don't change....and you won't change them. If you come, then remember it is for the money and live with the problems until you can go home.
It really won't be a good experience. |

why come?
For me it isnt all about the money, I want the experience.
Why come?
I know that most koreans arent wankers like most of these recruiters and hagwon honchos. Ive been there twice and I have a good number of friends there
Why come?
If they really dont want me, then id expect them to put up a barrier in the sky. I know that its gonna be hard to get in, but like someone said above, whoever does hire me will hire me for my experience and wont see me as Johnny Blue eye Blonde hair Won sign
Why come?
Cuz I sure as hell wont get discouraged by someone as negative as you. |

i would suggest joining some kind of program, like EPIK, i believe they are hired by qualifications, not pictures, by people back home. I am not sure though. then the school that receives you can't turn you down because they are stupid and racist... |

I'm a Canadian of east indian descent currently teaching in South Korea so if I can land a job here then so can you. Don't give up! Yes there is racism but it's no different from what you've experienced back home.
PM me if you want to know which recruiter I used. |

One of my occassional drinking buddies is an East Indian from Washington DC.. he's had quite a few teaching jobs here in Korea over the last 3-4 years since I've known him.
He seems to love Korea.. he keeps going back to the States after every contract, but gets pulled back here for whatever reasons just like the rest of us. |

sorry about seeming so negative...but it seems like a lot of people post here asking how they will be accepted in korea. Then people tell them white-lies like "it is great and no problem". These people come here and realize that some koreans don't like them because of their race. Then they come on here and complain like crazy about it, like it is a new thing. If you can accept that garbage then come, but if you are sensitive about your color or race, then don't come because it will be an issue at some point. |

Quite true....ibid ibid
One of the brightest, actually the girl who got the most marks out of all of us in Uni, was declined a study scholarship at Yonsei. The scholarships were given to: two whites, one Hong Kong Chinese, and two Taiwanese. It was declined to her because she was ..of a darker skin. The professor (Korean studies, Prof. Yoon) told her more directly than I have done so here.
She cried in in class after that meeting.
Gave me a new appreciation, too. |

I wont say that its easy finding a job in Korea if you are of color. However, that is not a reason why you should not try. When I first went to Korea 8 years ago, my director told me that they had a black teacher who lasted about two months: He couldnt handle the staring and pointing. I was there for a year! I never had one student say anything negative to me in regards to my color, I too am black. And the parents, well, maybe I was just lucky as hell, but I looked forward to going to their homes for a good home cooked Korean meal. Everyone seemed to really like me.
In my search for a job this time around, I did find it more difficult than my first year. Maybe the fact that I was eight years older had something to do with it; maybe I was looking in the wrong places. However, I received several offers after what seemed to be a life time, a couple of months.
If you wish to come to Korea, keep looking! Keep sending out the resume with picture. If a school doesnt what to hire you because you are not white, you dont really want to work there in the first place. You will find the school that you are looking for only if you dont give up.
In regards to racism in Korea, please let me know one place in this world where a person of my color, who was raised in The States, can go and not encounter some kind of racism. |

No offense to the poster above but this is absolute nonsense. It is for that exact same reason (the rudeness, and racism) that you should come. Much of Korean racism is grounded in a lack of exposure. If they (the Koreans) continue to form all their notions of race based around what they see in hollywood and what they are told by small minded koreans then bellum you are right, they will never change.
However if these racist notions are challenged by the behaviour of people of colour then Koreans will change. I am not saying that you should be an ambassador for your race, but through your actions and behavior they are forced to rethink much of there racism.
No, it will not work for the set in stone types but the same can be said for those racist types anywhere in the world. But in regards to the kids and many of their parents, a positive experience with a person of colour will go a long way towards shaping their opinions.
As for getting a job, feel free to pm me. My school puts on a camp (there are no FT jobs available right now). It would be a great start and get you the experience you need to get a job over here. At the end of the day, experience matters way more in most cases than the colour of your skin. |

Yes, I can see what you talking about about...but it is still garbage. Why do you care about changing the korean opinions. If it was my country then I would fight, but it is not. I want my money and a relatively stress free life. Most people are like me, they don't want to fight for changes in another country because it will never be their country. Telling him to come here and fight to change their opinions is stupid. It will accomplish nothing and give him stress and hassles.
They barely accept white people here and i have a friend who hears the korean word for "ni***er" just because he is dark. It sucks and he hears it all the time. I would not tell someone to come here and try to change these peoples narrow viewpoint...I will be honest and tell them the truth.
This isn't Canada and the U.S and hoping it is doesn't change anything. Time to realize that we are in a big world and most people are not accepting of something different.
If you can handle the crap then come, but if you can't then don't come . |
