English Instructor Needed at the Naval Administration School English Department in Jinhae

Quote:
Posted By: ROK Navy <[email protected]>
Date: Wednesday, 30 November 2005, at 1:36 p.m.

We are looking for an experienced teacher who is dedicated to helping students improve their skills.

This school has two 16-week courses, classes for officers and NCOs going abroad, and kids classes during school breaks from time to time. The students are mostly men ages 25-40 who have no duties other than to study English while at the school. There are three foreign teachers at the school and four Korean teachers.

Qualifications:
At least four years teaching experience in Korea. TESOL or CELTA certificates or higher are required.

Responsibilities:
Office hours: 8-5
Teaching hours: 4-6 hours per day with a maximum of 30 hours per week
There is a rotational schedule for teaching a two-hour Saturday class. It is held every other Saturday and is rotated between the foreign teachers. Compensation is provided.

Working conditions:
Salary: 1.8 million won
Vacation: 3 weeks per year

Health Insurance: the employee has access to free naval medical care
Housing: A 2-bedroom apartment is provided on a navy base. It is very quiet and safe. The navy pays for electricity, water, and a stipend for the gas bill. The teacher is responsible for paying a monthly fee of \23,000, anything above the gas stipend, phone, and internet fees.
Pension: 4.5% is paid by the navy and 4.5% is deducted from the teacher's salary
Severance: 1.8 million won
Visa run: Airfare to Japan will be provided, the remaining expenses in Japan will be covered by the teacher.

Yikes! Someone who has been teaching in Korea will work from 8-5, sometimes on Saturdays, with three weeks holiday, for 1.8? Confused

(1) Naval officers would make for an interesting group of students.
(2) You'd also be teaching English for a Special Purpose: they're going abroad so they need communication skills.
(3) And the location isn't bad.

I'd do it for up to six months just for the experience.

Take the job and I'll gladly do the tail end of the contract from September onward.

Talk to Yata-boy about navel officers.

I saw a few military jobs with much better hours and 2.2 / month offered last summer, so this one looks pretty sucky.

Better how? A bit more money perhaps. A few less hours a week work. There are other considerations.

I suppose for the experience it could be interesting, but it is way too many hours for the pay. No, at thirty teaching hours a week, it is just too many teaching hours, period. I know hogwan teachers do it, but it is not optimal for good teaching to be on that many hours. And what do you do with the other mandatory hours? Nine hours a day, five or six of them teaching, for 1.8- not a good job.

The one I applied for, but didn't get, was 15 lessons a week Mon-Fri at the air force academy for 2.2.

I don't think the military is looking for crude or rude or greedy or lazy teachers.

Everyone on this thread need not apply (present company included, for rudeness).

And they've already shanghaied three other foreigners into their ranks, presumably on similar terms. That's a very real pity, if true.

I'm sure I sound like an ass for saying this, but regardless of the working hours, what the HELL is 1.8 mil./month in Korea in this day & age?! Rolling Eyes

I have a mantra:

"It's all about the money, it's all about the money,it's all about the money".

This has too many hours and not enough money.

I have to agree, that job sucks.

For 30hrs a week teaching I'd expect no less than 3mil a month.

I am not lazy, but IMO it is just stupid to take less pay for a job that probably won't give you any self improvement in your craft.
