Well, that is one of the things that makes this issue so complexing.
Where are the defenders?
If this science is real...then the proponents of this stand to be compensated immeasurably.
So, why the bail out...really...Schatten and the others...what are they saying...or rather...what are they not saying and why?
Has the whole unethical breach become a non issue in light of recent events...now, the whole situation seems rather sordid.
If he is telling the truth...he will rocket to international superstardom.
If he is lying...ouch...how far can he run and hide in the next 10 days?
Either way...he seems to be in this on his own...and that is what is intriguing...why? (I hope the answer is not as obvious as it seems)

What about those other 20+ co-authors to this or his previous work? Where are they?

Several of them have gone to the US, two of them about two weeks ago, others earlier. One of them has been in hiding. There were a couple of stories about that one being out of communication with Hwang and everyone (?) else. Hwang has asked one specifically to come back and help in the lab.

Well, this is where I become suspicious. He claims to have cells being thawed by his team. The whole process of thawing and replicating would take a matter of minutes, not days. Well, unless he doesn't have any cells...

Yes, good points. If the Science is real, who stands to become compensated? Someone is gambling truth for money and prestige. We just don't know which side is, yet. The gains to be made, financial and otherwise, are too great for me to trust anyone involved at this point in time.

One of the articles says the cells are already thawed and the work has already started. Other articles say the cells 'will be' thawed.

Anyway, the results are due a day or two after Christmas. I guess we'll know then who has been straight with the facts. Or at least begin to find out.

Just for the sake of accuracy, they do.

Maybe one percent of the time?

I haven't seen it once in five years, and I've eaten a lot of rice with a lot of Koreans. They use a spoon. What Korea are you living in?

I guess they COULD use chopsticks but only a spoon allows 'em to fill their mouth to such overflowing capacity in a single thrust...

This short report summarizes all the new allegations. Even Snuppy and the cow may be fakes. From today's Chosun Ilbo:

Hwang Achievements Succumb to Domino Effect

More of the ground-breaking achievements of embattled cloning pioneer Hwang Woo-suk have come under suspicion after the scientist admitted fabricating data for a groundbreaking paper on stem cell research published in Science in May this year.

The Biological Research Information Center of Korea (BRIC) argues on its websites that a photograph of stem cells accompanying a 2004 paper by Hwang is identical to one illustrating an article on stem cell cultivation from fertilized embryos written by Kim Sun-jong and MizMedi Hospital research staff, which was published in Stemcells magazine in November 2004.

Kim is a former member of Hwangs stem cell research team, and the head of MizMedi Hospital is a former collaborator whose name appeared right next to Hwangs on the May 2005 paper. BRIC claims Hwang took a picture of the same stem cell from a different angle. Hwangs 2004 paper serves as the basis for the Science article on patient-specific stem cells.

BRIC scientists also point out problems with DNA fingerprints and the timing of stem cell cultivation, quoting Hwang as saying on June 7, 2004 that only two cell clusters survived an unexpected blackout in his lab in the fall of 2003, although he posted the 2004 paper in December 2003.

That was not enough time to cultivate stem cells from the two remaining clusters, the scientists say, since stem cells take at least three months to cultivate. The overseas press has also raised suspicions about the DNA fingerprints in the 2004 paper.

Doubts are also spreading to what is ostensibly the worlds first cloned dog Snuppy. Japans Yomiuri Shimbun on Monday quoted geneticist Robert Lanza as saying he had proof of scientific errors in Hwangs paper on the cloning of the dog. Lanza proposed comparing the original dog with the clone to confirm Hwangs claim.

Lanza is one of eight international scientists who recently wrote to Science urging Hwang to help verify research results. A professional rival, he works with bioengineering company Advanced Cell Technology. A BRIC member said there were no DNA fingerprints in Hwangs paper showing that the original and cloned dogs were genetically identical.

The avalanche unleashed by Hwangs admission on Friday also threatens to sweep away the cow Youngrongi, which Hwang claims to have cloned. Scientists now point out that the cow is said to have been healthy and given birth to a calf since it was born in 1999. But cloned animals are weaker than ordinary ones, and most are short-lived and lack the ability to reproduce, they said. Hwang published no paper on Youngrongi.

***
If some of these allegations prove true it will lend credence to the new theory that the mastery of chopsticks as a child develops the part of the brain that governs compulsive lying.

Well, apparently some members of the Korean government have come out saying results were falsified and that participated in the cover up. Some are even have doubts about his past experiences. The cow he claims to have cloned shows no symptoms that are usually present in animals that have been cloned. Some suspect he simply split the embryo, thus creating twins. I'd guess one half of the embryo could have been frozen to be 'cloned' once the other twin has become an adult.

As a Canadian I can relate to the feelings of the Koreans I know who are shook up about this.

He is Korea's Ben Johnson !

It shakes the national psyche.

Yeah, this was on MBC (I think) last night (December 20th)...saying that he's frauded papers in the past...I believe his whole past is being scrutinized.

Other members of his team are also being "investigated". Apparently, someone found that pictures of supposedly cloned cells in one of their papers are identical to pictures that were published by other researchers. There are suspicions about pictures in other articles written by his team members.
