Hey all,
This is my first post in the forum but I've been reading postings for a few weeks now and many of you seem like great people.
Anyway, after reading countless debates on whether it's better to come to Seoul and find a job or get one while you're in America, I decided to buy a ticket over here and start looking. I just arrived in Seoul a few days ago and am now mired in the job search. The things I'm looking for are pretty basic (acutally it's a list that that fuzzy body haired poster put up - you know who you are!):
-2.0 million for 120 teaching hours/mo
-free non-shared apartment
-roundtrip airfare reimbursed
-block shift
-health insurance
-pension
-Monday-Friday schedule, NO SATURDAYS
-2 weeks vacation
-all national holidays off (no need to make them up)
-any overtime is optional, paid at the rate of 120% of your standard hourly pay
-position in seoul
I've been searching the job postings board at Dave's and emailing recruiters asking if they can find me a position that fits these qualifications, but I'm still having trouble finding a position. Any suggestions? Should I lower my requirements? Any advice would be appreciated TONS!
oh, also, I'm a kyopo and I have an F-4 visa. Not sure if that helps or hurts me. Thanks! |

Look through some of the ads on Daves. There was a post looking for kyopos paying about 3.7 a while back.
Do you speak Korean?
If you do you can pretty easily get a directors job for about 2.5 or more(just dont screw people over if you get it) |

I speak very little korean...just about enough to explain to Koreans that I don't speak Korean well but not enough to answer followup questions of why I never learned.
wow, thanks for the quick response grotto! |

If you're here you don't need round-trip airfare - just a ticket home. That will already be a drawing card. I don't know much about what there is for Kyopos, but I do know that the job board for the site that rhymes with rectum has a number of jobs for Kyopos. PM me if you don't know what site I'm talking about. |

I have to agree there, work n play and Ann are nice - something you don't find often in that field of work...good luck! |

But incompetent, which you find with most recruiters. |

You may face some discrimination because you're kyopo, but that F4 visa gives you two huge advantages. One is that you won't need an E-2 visa, so your boss won't have to pay for a visa run, and you'd be able to start immediately. Also, and probably more importantly, you aren't chained to the E-2 system of indentured servitude, so if you end up with a bad job or just find something better, you won't need to ask anyone's permission to quit your job and get a new one.
If you're having trouble with in the kiddie hogwon scene, you might want to try adult hogwons. A lot of the big adult hogwon chains frequently hire kyopos, and seem to offer more reasonable conditions to their kyopo employees than they do to non-ethnic Korean foreigners (i.e. no split shifts). The only downside is that they usually don't offer (completely) free housing. |

Do tell....
I dealt with a recruiter back in 2001 who fits that description, and went on my own until last year - Ann and Wn'P were helpful to me while I was also looking on my own.
I agree with you and many others...you can and in many cases should steer clear of recruiters...but when someone is already here, and looking for a job, why not have someone else checking around for you at the same time you are? You aren't out anything by doing so.... |

They might be great for required documentation, and such for E-2 visa applicants, but are piss poor for those with F-2. They didnt know the difference between the two, and even after my explaination (and my wifes) about procedures and what is needed she continued to argue the opposite. I finally asked her to call immigration to confirm, yet she would not. I did end up taking a position with them, but it was as annoying as hell. If we had not just arrived back in Korea, and needed to get something quickly I would never have gone with them (or any recruiter for that matter). |

True, I have an F2 as well...does anyone who does paperwork in this country (ie. immigration, hogwans, recruiters...etc) know the difference....other than those of us who have one though |
