And we have Hollywood to thank for that rather silly sentiment. Arranged marriages have been around since the beginning of time and probably have a greater success rate than "love" marriages. Love comes and goes. Contracts are usually more binding. Google it, why don't you.

Sometimes I wonder if arranged marriages are really such a bad idea!

With the exception of various high-profile politically motivated ones, throughout history arranged marriages suprisingly had good success rates. In the US our own form of arranged marriages in recent history were arrangements brought about by "matchmakers". Studies have shown that introduction processes between individuals facilitated by a mature 3rd party who juged overall compatibility had a high frequency of marital success as well as relative happiness of the husband and wife thoughout the married years.

The question is why do they succeed.

The positive spin is: 1) you are your own worst judge of who is best for you 2) both families have a vested interest in keeping the marriage working and provide a lot of support: financial, child care, etc.

The negative spin, as highlighted by the other poster: the woman is trapped. If she leaves an abusive marriage, she'll be shunned by her own family and penniless.

I'm sure the reality is a bit of A and a bit of B. But I dunno, I'd rather marry and figure out I made my own mistake than be trapped in a marriage.

Corporal, why did you come back? I thought we ran you off, sweetie.

That was my opinion. Why would I need to google my opinion? It's not a silly sentiment. it's a common value among western people. Sorry your marriage sucks.

So many in favor of arranged marriages. To each his own. So how many of you are in arranged marriages?

It wasn't my intention to discuss the merits and demerits of arranged marriages- I was just looking for some wild stories. IMO, it was out of the ordinary.

I was on vacation in the West. Sorry if you thought I left permanently. Laughing And as for my marriage, well, I guess I do feel good that my husband doesn't have to try to sell those Ugg-ly boots to make a living. But then of course yours has you making pies and tarts to help pay the bills.

Although, I am not in favour of arranged marriages. I think they can work as long as both parties are completely honest with each other from the outset.

Point to note: My friends sister had an arranged marriage and the groom's family neglected to tell her family that their son was an abusive, Crack head before the wedding.

Who ARE you? I mean, who's nasty sock are you? Happy 1 month anniversary as Mills, btw. Huh- I don't remember mentioning she was black- I was trying to keep that out of it, because it DIDN"T MATTER what color she was. You have brought my thread up in 3 separate topics, I see. And you (and several others) misconstrued my comments, which I have thus apolgized for.

Quote:
Im confused; I assumed that since we are a seemingly educated community, experiencing an exotic culture firsthand, we might also share similar beliefs when it comes to racial bigotry.

Recently I have read a thread titled " Airport security power trippers", in which the OP begins by decrying the abusive power of a TSA screener, but eventually adds

OP wrote: blah, blah, blah.
Then you took my quote out of context.

You have issues. With me, personally.

Not cool. Get a life.
