As of sunday, my bit torrent speed was going smoothly at speeds of 125-450kbs. That was great. Starting Monday, however, it has "dropped". Now my average speed is 15. I have hit highs of 100, but still 15 is average. currently, I am at 0kbs. Before you ask, I have many many seeds on the files I am after. I thought that may have been the issue, so I picked up some hot torrrents. How can I remedy this?
Specifics: Havitnet service Premium
BT program: BitComet

I also use Mega pass, the most expensive package, forget the name they call it. Anyway I use Bittornado and get speeds on well seeded files (like today's Lost for example) that came in at over 900 kbs, I kid you not. I literally got the whole Lost show in like 5 minutes. Truly awesome! Can't imagine why your speeds just started to go down, sorry.....

Your internet provider might be limiting bandwidth on the port you're using for torrents. Try changing the port number (in your BitComet settings) to some random number (I use port 33265).

Also, some torrent sites and trackers are blocking the BitComet client completely, which limits the number of peers you can connect to. I recommend using Azureus.

I use Megapass Premium with Azureus and I routinely get DL speeds between 750-900kbps, fast enough to download a 350 MB file in about 5 minutes. Make sure to change the default port in Azureus to something different, and make sure that port is open on your firewall or forwarded in your router.

I'm not using a firewall actually, would turning one on boost the speed?

Can I use that in my signature? Laughing

No, a firewall won't boost your speed.
It will interfere with your torrents if not configured correctly.
However, it's a security feature most people these days would consider to be a neccessity.

1. Use a different BT client. Stop using BitComet and switch to Azureus.

2. Change the port.

3. See your speeds increase.

As the above poster said, change clients. The problem is Bitcomet, it has been banned at many private trackers or public ones that make you maintain a ratio. Bit comet does not accurately send data to the tracker.

Try bittornada, utorrent, etc.

Yep... I agree with what has been said already. Change your port and try a new client. Azureus is great but if you want a more straight forward app try Utorrent.

Are you in a heavily populated area? Did you notice that speeds improve at strange times? The area shares a limited amount of bandwidth, so if the area is using a lot of bandwidth then you are left with little. They have it set up so that you have high bandwidth for the first few minutes but prolonged use is dropped to a low priority. They have it set up for web page surfing which needs only a few seconds of speed...BT uses the bandwidth for a long time so they leach it back from you.
You cannot really change this much.

How much would Azureus or Utorrent slow down the computer? I ask because the old tracker I used was a nightmare at bogging down my computer. I switched to Bit Comet and - on this front anyway - have been happy.

utorrent is suppose to use the lowest system resources of any BT client. You can always go with bittornado though. I prefer that one... it is based on bit comet design but grew in a different direction.

yes Utorrent uses the least resources so I heard. It doesnt even install, its just the.exe. I have tried it, but I get better speeds with Azureus. Azureus is fine if you have plenty of ram (it's Java) , but I did have issues with it shutting its self down on earlier builds. Im running the latest 2.4.0.0 with a gig of ram now no worries. Bittorrent + Azureus + Korean hi speed broadband = Razz
