Woman Warrior-Amy Tan, more interesting than some of her other work, might be a little too short though.
Wicked-Gregory Macguire
Invisible Man-Ralph Ellison
Imajica-Clive Barker (Lots of erotic and homoerotic content though)
Tried to give you some different "pop"ish ones I hadn't seen on the list. |

For young kids I really reccommend the "Dark Materials Trilogy"
Book 1: Northern Lights (Golden Compass in the US, as apparently the Aurora Borealis is beyond comprehension )
Book 2: The Subtle Knife
Book 3: The Amber Spyglass.
All are great books, orginally kids but when the first got popular with adults it became a bit more heavy going. Be aware its quite anti church (it chronicles a war against god) but its been really well reviewed.
Also I recently read "The Bartimaeus Trilogy" which is a fantastic set of books set in an alternate England where wizards control parliament. A takeoff of the magic theme like Harry Potter but very different. Much more intelligent writing
Book 1: The Amulet of Samarkand
Book 2: The Golem's Eye
Book 3: Ptolemy's gate |

Anyhow here is a list of the books I have chosen. I went to Kyobo and a few of the books recommended were short and several i couldn't find. I actually only got one of the recommended books The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. I also picked up She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb and Going Postal by Terry Pratchett

Looks like you're going to have a good time. Life of Pi will make their heads explode, and there's no shortage of discussion on the DaVinci Code (debunking, rebunking, etc). "The Lovely Bones" is haunting and quite managable for vocabulary, but "The God of Small Things" may cause a mutiny. I love books and I have a robust vocabulary, but the writing style was unbearably florid, and very hard slogging. I gave up after the first chapter. |
