For young kids I really reccommend the "Dark Materials Trilogy"
Book 1: Northern Lights (Golden Compass in the US, as apparently the Aurora Borealis is beyond comprehension  )
Book 2: The Subtle Knife
Book 3: The Amber Spyglass.
All are great books, orginally kids but when the first got popular with adults it became a bit more heavy going. Be aware its quite anti church (it chronicles a war against god) but its been really well reviewed.
Also I recently read "The Bartimaeus Trilogy" which is a fantastic set of books set in an alternate England where wizards control parliament. A takeoff of the magic theme like Harry Potter but very different. Much more intelligent writing

Looks like you're going to have a good time. Life of Pi will make their heads explode, and there's no shortage of discussion on the DaVinci Code (debunking, rebunking, etc). "The Lovely Bones" is haunting and quite managable for vocabulary, but "The God of Small Things" may cause a mutiny. I love books and I have a robust vocabulary, but the writing style was unbearably florid, and very hard slogging. I gave up after the first chapter. |
