many whales and dolphins are killed accidentally in tuna nets, are they not? if that's the case, they may as well be eaten.

so under those circumstances, yes, you betcha!

i'd probably still eat even if it was killed deliberately for food though. i don't wanna see them go extinct but eating an intelligent or endangered species isn't the kind of thing i'm likely to loose sleep over, to be completely honest.

dolphins are a kind of whale aren;t they? so let's include them too. dolphins are similar to dogs in the following respect: people in the west have a trivial, sentimental affection for them because they're cute....altogether now....awwwwwwwww! probably whales too. i hate those kinds of people so, hell, i'd eat it all with gusto.

By that logic, would that make human roadkill fair game? If not, why not?

well, no. that's never gonna happen is it?

i'd eat human though personally. i'd be curious.

but advocating eating whales because they''ve been killed accidentally hardly commits one to the view that we should eat dead folks killed accidentally as well. frankly that's the silliest thing i've heard in ages! Laughing

Its not bad, not a lot of taste to it, good for your health apparently

Why not...I'm a carnivore and I'd just be hypocritical if I became selective in my meat choices! Does this make sense? Very Happy

There is nothing wrong with being selective, so long as you don't ram your values down other people's throats.

Would you call someone a hypocrite for quietly refusing one type of meat while accepting another?

I'd try it. Probably will.
I know a restaurant that serves it. 40,000 won/serving, though.
I think the owner was telling us it comes from beached whales.

They also serve beef galbi and spicy grilled eel.

Don't eat it. The "accidental" bycatch in Korea is too large to be a mistake. It has the largest "unintentional" bycatch of whales of any country!

Its deliberate, and is threatening several whale species that are verging on extinction. But the Korean govt doesn't care about endangered species- too keen to ressurect an illegal trade in whaling and revitalise the seaport of Ulsan, for example. so..unofficially, the trade goes on indiscriminately and under the table. Massive driftnets are left for days out at see, drowning and killing everything from Turtles, dolphins to whales. Koreas seas are extreme in this way, they resemble a gigantic trap for any marine life. By eating whalemeat you are encourageing it. there is no need in this day and age for people to eat great whales that are now so few in number...go get yourself a bibimbap or something instead.

http://www.commondreams.org/cgi-bin/print.cgi?file=/news2005/0526-22.htm

Greenpeace and KFEM say that building a whale meat factory will hasten the decline of Koreas few remaining whales, by industrialising the trade in whale meat, a trade which scientists predict will push Koreas whales to extinction. In Korea, whales can be brought ashore and sold for meat only if they are accidentally caught. However Korea has accidental bycatch rates up to a hundred times higher than nations that do not have a whale meat trade.

It does not take a genius to see that in a country where dead whales are worth up to $100000, that this industry will encourage the deliberate targeting and illegal hunting of Koreas disappearing whales, said Wickens. "It is a bit like building an ivory factory in Kenya for elephants that have accidentally died."
